I am 5'-8" and have a naturally more upright swing which creates havoc with longer clubs at time.

I noticed while wearing my work boots (about 2" heel) a driver felt so much more natural and even went out and hit a few with it and tried to get more upright now that i have some extra room between my arms and the ground. I hit the ball great and it got me wandering if shortening my clubs would help out and allow me to keep the upright swing on the longer clubs?

Any shorter people out there with upright swings went with shorter length clubs and possibly a more upright lie? I swing the Tour Burners and they are already about 1/2" or more longer than other clubs.

i recommend getting a lesson from your local pro instead manipulating clubs to fit an incorrect swing.

I have and he mentioned that I could be struggling from the length of the driver however was hesitant to cut it down.

On Ping's website I jusr put in my stats and it showed me for -.25" on a driver.

I see, well then i would consult back with the pro and go from there...if he thinks you need to cut it......cut it :P

The feel I had when swinging with the boots on was much more free and easy, didn't feel like the club was swinging across my body. I get stuck with a driver 8-10 times and it is definitely from an overactive lower half but there is also a confidence factor that the club is too long to swing controlled.

You could do the Anthony Kim and grip down an inch on every single club ;P But as mentioned earlier, see about a lesson possibly, or at least consult your PGA pro about cutting down and/or fitting.

Hit the range, confidence will come with practice

Forget them, I too am about 5'8" and had the same problem. My irons are cut -3/4" from actual standard(37.25 for the 5 iron) and it really free's up my swing. My driver and 3 wood however, I cut over an inch off of them and don't really have a problem with lost distance. I've tried flattening out my swing a bit but it just felt unnatural. I also am able to make solid ball contact and have a natural draw to my swing, so I've decided to live with it!

If you need shorter clubs then you have to get them. It is nearly impossible and to be honest, wrong to make somone swing to fit their clubs. your pro will have stickers that you put on the clubface. Go and hit half a dozen balls with a couple of clubs and it will show on the stickers. If your needing clubs shorter, the majority of the balls should be hit towards the heel of the club. (It will be obvious from the stickers where the balls are being hit on the clubface).
Also for the lie, he will have stickers that he puts on the sole of the club and also a board that you will swing the club on to. The stickers will show what part of the club is hitting the ground first. If it is towards the toe you will need to get them more upright and vice versa. Your pro should explain all this though.

First off, don't listen to the people telling you to manipulate the swing to fit your club. That's absolute nonsense. Everyone has their own fit, some are upright (like me), and some are flat. You will never, ever, ever play well with an improperly fit club. There is no correlation between height and fit, some very short people are upright, other tall people are flat. It's all about how you're shaped, and how long your arms are. There is no, and I mean no, set rule on length of club and lie. Whatever fits you best, even if it's 2" short and 3° upright. You can try to fight nature, but nature will always win.

A major myth is that you will lose distance cutting down a club. For every inch you cut from a driver, you'll lose about 2 yards. But, if you miss the center of the clubface by just a half of an inch, you'll lose about 20 yards. It's much more important to hit the center of the face than to have a long shaft you can't control. Go to your local fitter or pro, and have them fit you. They can bend your clubs to fit, and they can cut some length of of them if you need it.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

90% of my ball marks with every club especially the longer ones are center to heel. The driver is especially bad for that.

I am 5'9" with a very upright swing. I got fit by a pro and ended up with .5" short and 2 degrees upright. While my swing is probably a little too upright for a purest taste it is my swing and I am hitting the new irons so much better. While I got fit for my irons I have not for others. I choke up a half inch on my hybrid and driver.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
