believe it or not, but I have an old wedge that i still use because i like it so much and I ended up buying a groove sharpener on e-bay (i was skeptic ) but I thought I'd give it a shot for $14 and the little gadget is amazing...it works really well . the first time i did it, i went a little overboard and it was scuffing my balls up pretty bad..LOL... now what i do is, every 3 or 4 rounds i go over my wedge with the sharpener a few times...Benn using this thing for 3 years so i already got my money's worth.

This is the one i bought, although when i bought mine, they hadn't invented the large grip , LOL, so mine is a little tough to use, this looks alot easier to use since they added the grip

Very interesting - I always wondered if these things worked. I'll have to pick one up now!

I know it doesn't matter to those who already use them... but are they legal? Meaning... by USGA standards... if I were to use this on my clubs, are my clubs still conforming to USGA regulations?

I guess if i was getting paid to play golf i might give a crap, but since i just play to have a good time, i'm using it!...besides i dont really seewhy it would be illegal, i'm sure pro's need to sharpen their wedges at some point too., right?

I could truly care less

why you use it... it's your game and if you're having fun, that's awesome! I'm asking because I'd like to know for MY game. If it's illegal... I'd rather not use them. If it's legal... my wedges could absolutely use some sharpening. But since I play in quite a few tournaments each year... I don't want to cause issues for myself. CY

I see your point. But i highly doubt it could be illegal to use. Like I said, i am sure that at some point sooner or later, clubs need to be regrooved and i don't see why that would not be legal. I guess the only thing that comes to mind is if "certain" ways or tools to regroove might be illegal. I'm surprised no one else has chimed in to verify.

There are three contributing factors to spin (bite) the ball. Grooves, ball, and swing. If you are not playing a more expensive ball. You are not going to spin it. What type of iron is it. I had a Canadian Tire special and then I bought a cleveland, and the differnce was huge. You get what you pay for. Also if you are taking a full swing with a 60 degree. And this is a 70yard club, someone who hits the ball 90 yards with the same club has more clubhead speed, which means more backspin and more bite. Maybe you already knew this, but I didn't see the ball type or wedge type in your sig, and it make a HUGE difference.

In regards to the legal/illegal discussion, I assumed that with the new groove changes instituted by the PGA that sharpening your grooves, especially if they were not sharpened in the "V-shape", would be illegal, at least in terms of the PGA. This is the best literature from the PGA regarding the issue on the PGA website, and it's a quote from Cleveland Golf:

"You can repair your current clubs going forward (re-grip, new shaft), but you cannot touch the head without making the club non-conforming," Cleveland Golf says in its explanation of the new rule. "

If you never play in local tournaments, I don't think you have much to worry about.

    • I'd find a free fitting, take your clubs, and see what you can see. For example, we have a PXG fitter come to our academy every Tuesday, and he's great about sharing info about why he's having you hit a certain shaft or clubhead or something. And… if you don't see much of a change, skip it.
    • Day 1 (3 Apr 25) - Restarting the routine after a 4 day quick trip.  Got back in the groove today for some swings of the 6i and driver into the net -‘to just warm the muscles a little.  Wrapped up the day with grandson hitting 20-25 yd pitches in the backyard.  Love watching his swing and also his concept of course management, to hear him say he left himself in a good position to finish (good words from a soon to be 9 yr old)….
    • Day 185 - 2025-04-03 Had a good 2.5 hour session at Golf Evolution. Kinda glad it was still wet and windy out today as I wouldn't have gotten such a good session in if I played. Got up to 93 MPH (with a pause) on my 6I and 130 MPH ball speed (on a different slightly slower hit, a bit more de-lofted than I'll want eventually).
    • I'm highly probable for the entire weekend, thanks for doing the hard work to set it up.  I can't wait for more details.
    • I take 2nd, is a confirmation that you can eventually win your major and also is good material for having a laugh about it in the distant future.
