3 or 5 wood

irons 5-SW
#4 hybrid
Driver

should i get a 3 wood or 5 wood to fill the gap between hybrid and driver..?? i cant afford both at the moment so what would be of more use???

would a 5 wood go much further than a 4 hybrid( in theory)... im fairly new to golf so any help would be great...

I do believe a 5 wood would go maybe 20 yards farther than a 4 H. I used to carry a 5 wood since I played a pull draw and delofted the club. I could hit this farther than any three wood until this year. I recently changed to a push draw and just started carrying a 3 wood since I hit the ball higher. If I were you, I would go to a range (outdoor) and hit a bunch of demos and see what you like more.

I think i might try both like you suggest,i did have a 3 wood but had big problems hitting it,long shaft small head didnt go down too well for me...maybe a 5 wood slightly shorter shaft would be better,but having said that i could just choke down on the 3 wood until i feel happier hitting with it..

Not sure about the hybrid question, but I have only a 5W. In my case it's due to an unfortunate event that befell my 3W, but it works out pretty well. I hit the 5W better than I did the 3W, particularly off the turf. There's a pretty large gap between that and my driver, but at my skill level I'm not realistically playing target golf at the 200 or 210 yard distances that I'm missing. I've got a 4I and the 5W is comfortably longer than that, so if your 4H is playing like a 4I then maybe that's helpful info.

Get a 4w! Why not compromise? 4w is easier to hit than the 3w, and distance is better than 5w.

Why not demo both and see what happens. The local golf store that visit will tape them up and let you hit the driving range. That is how I found the right driver for me. But I ain't no pro either so a few hits can make my decision.

I went to the TMPL and was recommended to use a 4w instead of a 3w. I love it and agree that it is so much easier to hit.

Yep-recent Golf Digest article about how nearly all golfers hit a 4 wood longer than a 3 wood anyway. Look for a 17* or 18* fairway wood, doesn't matter whether they call it a 4 or 5 wood.

ditto on th 4W. it's in my bag as well, and allows me to carry 4 wedges - i find yardage decisions between 70 - 120 yards are much more common and important than 200-240 (my home course doesn't have a specific long par 3 that i'd need a certain long yardage), and i'd much rather be able to use my full wedge swing whenever possible.

Just took out the 3 & 5 and went with a 4 wood. So far I am very happy.

I added a 3-wood and 5-wood last year after a few years of "driver, 2-iron"

I could go after more par 5s and still hit tight fairways.

My favorite club in the bag is my 5Wood.

I hit it 20-30 yards further on average than a very well struck 4 hybrid.

It's much easier to hit off the deck than a 3 wood (another stick I love, too).

If I was just getting into the game like you are, I'd get much more use from a good 5 wood.

I recently sold my 3 & 5 wood and replaced them with a 17 degree hybrid.
Always struggled with the 3 wood and although had no problems hitting the 5 wood it had a very high ball flight (not ideal for a links course).
The hybrid is workable (high or low, left to right) with minor setup adjustments (stance, ball position etc) and gives the confidence to go for all but the longest par 5s in 2.
I had always been skeptical about hybrid clubs, preferring to hit long irons, but as a replacement for fairway woods I think they are a good substitute, allowing aggressive shots to be played from a variety of lies.
