87, par 71. Really? Felt great thru 11 holes, as I was still +3... then a bad tee shot on 12 (short, 90º right par 4) and a tree branch knocking down my 2nd shot started a string of weird holes. Par on the next par 3, and playing safe on the next short Par 5 killed me... Drove left of the fairway, layed up with a PW to about 105yds in the middle of the fairway. Hit a crisp sandwedge to the green... well uh, just happened to be a perfectly struck shot -- that went 110yds. Took a big bounce about 20yds behind the green. Bogey. And took an 8 on the next... with a 6 on the next par 3. Awful.

Ever have that kind of up and down round? The front 9 was great, 2 birdies (missed a 2ft birdie!) and a few pars. Just a double bogey that shouldn't have happened.

We've all had them. Sergio had quite an adventure in Louisiana on Thursday. Congratlations on breaking 90. An 87 sure feels a lot better than an 89 for the first time.

Been there, done that, hurdl3r!

The best are when you go 39-50 -- the coveted 80s round without a nine in the 40s!

Dude, I've gone 38-53, so I know what's that's like. You just lose your swing, go on tilt and all of a sudden you're done. For me, it's the mental game. I know I'm good enough to put up scores, but as soon as I see that 38 on the front, I get freaked out and it takes a lot of concentration and the right environment for me to relax enough to have a decent back nine.

BTW, I hate when you're at that distance where you need a solid SW to the green. Hit it a little thin and you're screwed. A little fat and you're screwed. For whatever reason, it's kind of a tough shot. And the worst part is, the shot always comes after a great drive, so you ruin a perfect shot.

I saw a guy at a high school meet go 31 then 45 so I'm sure other people have felt your pain.

    • The chatter in my brain is when the distance is between clubs since I am pretty weak at shortened backswings, etc. I try to simply decide if being long or short is the better outcome and choose my club based on that and simply not even try for the “real” distance.  For me a full normal swing is what I strive for.
    • I saw this comment made in a golf article... "Most golfers stand over a 4- or 5-iron still negotiating with themselves. They think about how hard to swing, whether they have the right club, if they have the aim correct and more. It’s a lot to deal with and long irons punish the “half-in” golf swing." I am not sure the "most golfers" is correct regarding the bolded part. I can understand if there is a bunker, water, and/or OB that a lot of golfers would be fixated on that. I am not sure that leads to ending up more times there. Pending your level in golf, the variance is so large in outcomes, it could be just with in the expected outcomes. I can understand if have a big lake on the right side of the hole being one of the most terrifying shots for right-handed amateur golfers.  I am not sure many golfers are standing over the ball talking to themselves, "Ok, maybe I should step back and pull the 4-iron. Am I lined up right? Oh, the wind came up, should I swing harder? What am I going to have for dinner tonight, maybe steak. (Joking, somewhat 😛)" A question is that how much chatter do you get while standing over the ball. Are you questioning the everything about your golf shot?
