I was on the 3rd hole of my tournament on Sunday afternoon and I had hit a sand wedge out of a trap but caught it pretty thin and sent it over the back of the green. I was above the green by about 7 feet and had about 12 yards to the pin. I had to land it in the rough to kill it and then let it trickle down to the hole otherwise it would have probably rolled off the front of the green.

I hit the shot pretty much exactly where I needed, but it caught a tuft of grass that bounced it higher than I anticipated and it stuck there. Even though the shot didn't work out as I'd planned (I ended up carding a double)... I was happy with how well I'd played it.

Anybody else have shots like that where, even though the end result wasn't EXACTLY what you were hoping for... you knew you had played a great shot?

Yeah i have done that, you can't fault that. If you played the shot you exactly imagined and it didn't turn out then there's no fault. This usually happens on puts that don't end up breaking enough.

My first birdie in.. years... came after a flubbed chip. There's a par 5 at one of the courses I play that's 425 yards steadily uphill with a fairly well-protected green. I nailed a nicely-shaped drive into the right rough but in a good position, and then a solid 6I to maybe 30 yards off the green. This would have been great, but it settled in a circle of completely grassless dried out hardpan soil around a tree. There was no interference from the tree itself, but there was no way I was going to get my 56/13 sand wedge under it, so I went with a PW instead. It's a hard green to land on and I was short-sided with a mound between me and the flag, but this is a good chipping distance for me, so I knew I could fly the pin and at least be on the green with hope for a 2-putt par, which is rare enough. So I set up and, of course, bladed the chip. I groaned as it skittered hot toward the green, sure it'd end up 10 yards off the green on the other side.

But not that day. Thanks to the mound, it took a high bounce and settled 10 feet below the pin and I drained it for a GIR birdie. As it turned out, that was probably 20 feet closer than I'd have been had I hit the ball cleanly, and I'd not have had a straight uphill putt so a 3-putt for bogey would have been a distinct possibility. So as it turned out, mishitting that chip was the luckiest break I had all day! (It was also my second ever and second consecutive 9-hole round under 50, which made it all the sweeter)

Last time I played I was hitting my approach to an elevated green, that shot should have gone 15 yds past green (wrong club) but a tree got in in the way and plopped it down about 15' from the hole :)

I was playing and I came to the 16th at Magnolia at Disney. Hit a 3 wood off the tee, but it went hard right, and was behind a tree. There was a pond short of the green. Had 170 into the green, and was in fairly deep rough. Figured why not give it a shot. Pulled a 6 or 7 iron, think it was a 6. I had to hit a huge slice, and I made pretty good contact, the thing took off like a rocket, and turned right. It just barely cleared the water, but and plugged into the side of the bank. I made double, but man, that was a pretty hard shot to pull off. Can't believe I almost made it.

sliced the hell out of a driver and smashed it right into a tree, which bounced off and placed the ball neatly on the fairway. :)

To the OP, yes I've had shots like that plenty of times. Other side of the coin: I've also had plenty of shots that turned out well but that I wasn't too thrilled about, because I didn't hit the ball the way I planned. For example, maybe I have a 20 foot putt with a lot of break, and I am trying to die the ball near the hole for a tap in two-putt. I under-read the break and also putt the ball too hard (so I would end up maybe 8 or 10 feet past the hole), but I get lucky and the hole gets in the way and the putt drops in. I'm glad the putt went in, but I'm not happy with how I hit the shot.

It's all part of the game, and part of what makes it so fun. I think the good luck and bad luck evens out over the long run.
