Just curious if I am a loner here. Seems like the latest thing is to not use a 3w and use a 4w instead. I decided to kind of go a different route and take my 3w and 5w out of the bag and replace them with hybrids. I can hit the 3w well but I would rather be 10 yards back and almost always in the fairway with my 3h. I also like to carry 4 wedges (PW, 52, 56, 60) so I needed to make room. My odd setup is:

Driver
3h 19*
4h 22*
4i-pw
52, 56, 60

In case you're wondering....I like carrying a 4h and 4i because to me they are both very different animals. 4i keeps it low and out of the wind and the 4h gets me in the air quickly, I can stop it better and hit it 10yrds further.

So does anyone else only carry a driver and no other woods.....or am I just a freak??

What's in my bag:

I only have my driver, then 3 4 and 5 hybrids. No other woods. I can hit my 3H just as far if not further than my 3 wood, 220-230 yards. I have a cheap Powerbilt 4H that goes even further for some reason.

At the moment, I only carry a 4H and 5H with my driver. I do, however, hit the driver off the deck fairly consistently, but a bit shorter than I do off a tee, so it subs as my 3W.

I've toyed with the idea of all hybrids and no woods but I just seem to hit my 3 wood so much better than any other 3 wood that I've ever held in my hands. I am currently in between a 19* Titleist 585H and a 20* Cobra Baffler DWS for my hybrid. The Titleist goes about 205-215 and the cobra is about 220-230 club but with the heavier shaft I enjoy my 585H but I think I need a little lighter shaft in it to add some distance.

Dude, you have two hybrids in the bag.

It seems nobody so far is going Driver, irons, and putter. When your setup is something like D, 2i-PW, SW, LW, P, you're playing without extra woods. Hybrids are essentially short shafted fairway woods.

I have a 5W in the bag which I occasionally use off the tee and sometimes from the fairway (or sitting up in the rough), but I've added some distance to my irons recently, so I find myself using it less. Yesterday I was contemplating that there are fewer and fewer spots where I need it, since as long as I'm hitting my 4I cleanly, it's more accurate (I tend to pull it, but it's more of a straight pull whereas my miss with the 5W is a slice that's less predictable). The two holes on my home course where I used it were a pair of long par 4s, but between added distance on my driver and 4I, I can now just about reach them with that combination. So I think other than a couple tee shots, I'm unlikely to use it except on a longer course than mine. Even the tee shots, I think the 4I would make more sense for me since I'm only slightly less likely to find trees with the 5W than driver, so I'd happily give up the 10-15 yards that the 4I loses compared to 5W to have position, especially on a 300-350 yard par 4. After all, I'd rather have a 100-150 yard approach from the fairway than 50-100 from behind a tree...

I know what you mean....Dude. But there really is no comparing the swing or the loss of distance between a 3 and 4 hybrid and a 3 and 4 or 5 wood....which is why I asked. I have never seen anybody go with my setup...which is another reason why I was curious.

I'd be curious to hear more set-ups everyone....always good to get different perspectives and why they chose to go that route.

I use my hybrids off of the tee regularly. At least once a round. They're the easiest clubs to hit in my bag (reletive to distance) so why not use them as often as possible?

With an older favourite there's no need to carry fairway woods - there are no yardage gaps. I have a backup set like that.

If I didn't have a yardage gap between a 3h and my driver in my daily gamer set, I'd be in the market for a new driver. PS. Your sig still includes a 3-wood (no 5-wood) so this is a theoretical bag makeup, or you're already there?

Funny you said that....after I made that post I said to myself....'Gee, I ned to change my sig....I have a new putter and my bag changed'. I dropped the 3 wood a month ago. I found that I just didn't really use it....maybe once a round, if that....and I wanted to add a 56*, which I did.

I hear you about the yardage gap. There is a big gap between the driver and 3h (50 yrds) but like I said.....the 3h is my best club and I'd rather be 15 yrds back but safe almost all of the time than 15-20 yrds further without as much accuracy. It hasn't killed me yet but it will be interesting to hear if people had the same setup as me...and what issues they saw.

I play Driver, 3H 4H in my bag although the lofts make them equivalent to a 2i and 3i in my set. I'm toying with the idea of finding a 3 wood though, I just can't hit these friggin hybrids anymore, they are all just snap hooks or a big push. But I did this setup because I hated my woods in my last set where they were just shrunken versions of the driver... I just couldn't get the ball off the ground without it being a snap hook or a bladed push-fade.

I hit my 3 iron 230 when I need to, and I have trouble hitting woods. So I do not carry fairway woods, and Hybrids are for old people

Currently using a 16* Cobra Baffler DWS Hybrid. Does that count as a fairway wood?

I'm not sure, but your 20* Heavenwood sure does.
