I'm looking for a very cheap very finder. I have a GPS but would like a range finder to use at the range where they don't list distances.

Any ideas?

Has anyone tried one of these? Again, I'm not looking for pin point accuracy. Just general ball park.

Pace the yardages for ballpark numbers. I think if it can pick up a signal, all rangefinders are essentially pinpoint.

Pacing yardage at your local driving range is generally not looked upon as accepted practice. Not to mention dangerous. ;)

I've got an older one without pin seeker technology. I'd check ebay. Mine wouldn't pick up a flag past 140 or so but it works for what I need it for. I bet you could get one like mine for 50 bucks. It is an old Bushnell.

The problem with cheap range finders is that they cant pick up a pin past 150 yards. They might be able to get targets at your driving range, but they are useless on the course. When my Bushnell 1500 broke, I replaced it with their less expensive model.. I used it for 3 rounds and brought it back for a 1600.

I haven't had any trouble with the Tour V2 - yet.

I got one of those. I think it's a Bushnell. It goes up to 200 yards. You should try your local golf store, I'm sure they would have many there.

If you have a GPS-enabled Blackberry, there is BBGPSgolf which can be downloaded for free. The program has occasional bugs, but in general the yardages are always within a few yards of any sprinklerheads on the courses I play. It does drain the battery a fair bit as well (although you can set how often it updates GPS coordinates to less frequently and it will save some battery life). You can also map by yourself (using Google maps) any courses not already mapped - i've actually mapped the driving ranges at my most common courses (as separate "courses" in the database) as well.

The Bushnell I picked up is (theoretically) good up to 1 km, but you'd need to use a tripod for that.

That one you linked to is a scope, not a range finder. There is no laser. It is basically a binocular with a little diagram on the lens that you use to measure the height of the pin. I have one and it is absolutely useless.

They can be helpful for telling how far you hit. If your, say, 150 yards from the green, and you hit the ball onto the green, then you know that you hit 150 yards.

Of course there are more accurate ways to judge how far you hit, it's they cheapest one.

My Bushnell Tour V2 came in the mail this week. And after playing 2 complete rounds with it, I'm really enjoying it.

In my weekly game, there are 2 GPS in our foursome. But the laser showed it's accuracy on the par 3s and 5s when it showed the actual distance to the pin or long range targets ("that tree is 250yds away").

Yeah, the Tour V2 had trouble picking up 1 flag stick out of 36. I'll take that margin for error compared to standing over a ball and watching the GPS change numbers.

In my bag:

One for slicing
One for hooking
One for knocking it in the cup

    • Day 2: August 12.  I did 25 balls of the ruler drill from LSW for putting.  24 of the 25 stayed on the ruler through 36" but some were smoother than others.  I suspect if the ruler (and goal) had been 48" far fewer would have stayed on.  I'm trying to go by sound, and not look, since when I attempt short putts, I don't want to look (although now I wonder if that's conventional wisdom that turns out to be wrong).
    • Day 17: did mirror work while watching TV. Working on wrist feels.
    • Day 315 - 2025-08-12 Got a little work in before Juniors showed up for one of their Summer Sessions.
    • I always knew it as high but never that distance was 90-95% of rating! That has always played to my advantage. I never have but I could totally vanity cap myself by playing **super** long courses that are otherwise super easy. There was one course like that in LA that I used to play that helped my cap like that. The back tees were close to 7k yards, but otherwise the course was incredibly easy. Wide open, misses almost always had a play at the green from the adjacent hole, flat greens, not challenging green complexes, etc. But it got a high rating because it was so long. So I could swing hard, spray and pray, and score well (relative to my handicap).
    • Do need a special ferrul. Thanx 😉
