Back spin!

I finally got a ball to come back a little... just wish i could figure out how to do it without a wet green. Can you get backspin without taking a full swing? like what is the minimum distance you can still acheive spin? and whats the highest club you can still spin?

Cause to ever back up or consistently back up? The tallest club I've backed up was my 9i coming off a tee on a par 3, but there's no way I could reliably do that.

The minimum distance to get the ball to take 1 hop and stop would be 40 yds. Minimum to get the ball to come back would be 70. Highest club i have spun back would be a 5 iron, but only about 1 foot

Not true... I can pull the string on a 10-15 yard shot out of the sand.

Hit it right in the screws, that's how. Contact is everything. Grooves and balls will help, and in both cases, you want good ones, but if you miss the center of the face, or don't hit down on the ball, it's not going to spin. Heck, my sand wedge grooves are completely shot and I can still spin it just fine from a dry lie.

I spun my 4i once it was an amazing towering flight though I just nailed it

I've got backspin with just about every club in my bag. I don't hit greens with the driver that often so I don't see it suck back, but I don't get much roll with my ball flight. Otherwise, it's usually, hop hop, check and then suck some direction depending on shot shape. I use tp black's and it doesn't suck back a long distance, maybe around 1-3 feet, like a v1x with a touch more. For it to come straight back at me, I usually need the club head to pass at least my waist. You can still use spin on your short chips and pitches. I like to mostly cut it so when it lands, it pulls itself to the right.

you just gotta hit it clean, and hard.

Backing a ball up on the green is overrated. Just sayin...

Accelerate through the ball is what works for me. I can get a 3/4, knock down 7-iron to back up if needed. It is all about your contact through the ball and any club can spin

As shades mentioned, it is a bit overrated. It is neat to do and to look at, but it can also be a blessing and a curse. For every shot I have hit behind a hole with the intention of backing up that worked, there has been a shot that I didn't want to spin and the ball hits right next to the hole then backs up 20 feet. Or the dreaded shot that hits on the top tier of a 2-tiered green and spins back to the front. I much prefer to just hit balls that stop within a foot or two of where they land.

i spun a 5i from 195yds out - it hit and spun back about a foot (used to have a pic of it somewhere.....)
but like some have mentioned above, kinda overrated
i too like to see the ball hit and stay within a foot of the divot, in any direction is fine w me

This reminds me of a Lee Trevino story. I'm paraphrasing because an internet search came up empty but it went something like this: Trevino was doing a question and answer session and some guy asked him how he could get the ball to back up like the pros. Trevino asked him how far he hit his PW and the guy told him 75 yards. Trevino's response was, "then why the hell would you want it to back up?".

I'd agree, backspin like most people imagine it, with the ball moving backwards 10 or 15 feet, is not necessary for most of us. But having the ability to hit a short shot that checks up quickly is a very useful shot to have in the bag. Just sayin...

I never said anything about "backspin" being overrated. I said "backing a ball up" is overrated.

Just sayin...

I didn't even consider sand shots. My numbers were assuming from the fairway.

To summarize:

1. Use an expensive ball 2. Use a wedge, not a long iron 3. Clean your grooves 4. Hit it hard 5. Hit it in the center of the club face I don't know how important #1 is relative to the others, but I bet #4 and #5 are important as well. I "think" i'm hitting it hard, but reality is I'm not hitting anywhere near as hard as the pros. Also, I "think" I'm hitting the center of the club, but my reality is I'm probably not - more likely I'm hitting more towards the bottom of the club face.

Look at all the pro's,they land the ball within a foot of the pin and backspin it 10+ feet away....to get the ball to check and sit after a hop or two ,now that is impressive.....!!

Some of the pros backspin the ball right off the green. Definitely requires precision and control.
