“He got heckled by a 7-year-old,” Goydos said with wonder. “That’s brutal. He’s got to get used to that. He’s got a lot on his head and the game is hard. And it’s hard for everybody. He made it look so easy, so when he’s not making it look easy, we wonder what’s wrong. He’s going through a tough patch. If he has 80 percent of the people completely idolizing him, that’s still a big drop.

When I think about a 7 year old being a heckler, I get this image of him sitting with his father, you know the type, three day beard, wrinkled camouflage shorts, hat on backwards, beer in hand yelling "get in the hole" at the tee on a par five. The kind of father and son team to be proud of. They only came out to the golf tournament because the world cage fighting tour was in town last week.

If that was my son... well I'd like to think my son wouldn't even consider that... it reflects very poorly on the parent.

If that was my kid, he would've got a nice back hand on camera.

Yep.....what kind of parent would allow their kid to heckle players without a good slap to the back of the noggin.

Some people would actually frown on both the boy's comment and a parent giving him "a good slap to the back of the noggin." Some people are so judgmental.

As a spectator at a golf tournament I would figure the same etiquette should be expected by the crowd as is expected of the players. If he was my kid I would likely never bring the brat along again until he was old enough to use his brain and understand that kind of sh*t is not gonna fly at a PGA event ;P

Yep, exactly. That kid acted/said no worse than Tiger does on any given day.

So if your child insults the almighty Tiger Woods, you would assault them?

Tiger, Phil... anyone... anywhere... that's not acceptable behaviour

and a slap for misbehaving is hardly assault.

If that is all the kid said, he doesn't deserve a slap to the back of the head.

Tiger just needs to get a divorce and then jump back on the ho train to get his groove back.

Not what I meant, it matters not who was insulted, as a spectator one shouldn't say that kind of shit to anyone playing. You are paying to watch the best golfers in the world play, not to allow your 7 year old son to be a jackass on national television :P

Jeez, the kid is 7 years old, do you expect his entire behaviour to reflect that of his parents? Kids will be kids. I'd be more worried if this was a grown person. Not that it is a nice thing to say, by all means, but slapping your kid for a remark like that? Let's calm down a bit.

In any case, golf fans are pretty calm compared to most sports.

Kids will be kids

Wrong. Kids will be the type of kids they are raised to be. It doesn't matter what their personality, temperment, or level of patience is, ALL kids can be taught to exercise self-discipline and show respect. This is clearly the fault of the parent. Dad is a scumbag and so is mom.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
