Im curious how those of you that play in tournaments prepare before the tournament. What do you do to get ready the week before play, the day before, and the day of play???
I have a big tournament coming up, and Im nervous. This is the first competitive tournament ill be playing in outside of my club, and that isn't for charity...

In my Ogio bag.

I would just suggest spending some time chipping and putting everyday leading up to the tournament. If I were to get nervous, I would probably have a stiff drink before to calm the nerves!

If you can, go to that golf course. If not go to one of a similar length, because if the real course is a long one you want to be able to practice long iron shots. Other than that, have a couple of good range sessions, and hit the chipping green.

go to the range and play the course out on it. Driver, iron, chip shot, etc. Try to make it as real as possible. Also another thing is to practice hitting so many shots in a row to a target (like an imaginary fairway between 2 flags) so it will help you get used to some type of pressure.

Thanks for the tips, Im hoping they'll help.

Luckily I do get a chance to play a practice round this week. Thursday or Friday. The tournament is Saturday and Sunday... I can't decide wether to play a practice round on Thursday and take a day off or play on Friday, then play the 1st day of the tournament the next day.

Yesterday I went to the range and practiced my chipping. My irons were junk, so I stopped hitting and just chipped... I find it hard to practice on mats, personal preference I guess? Luckily the range I went to had a grass short game area.

I like the simulated fairway idea. Thanks.

Chip and Pitch.....hit those good ....and full swing impact is a baby step away. All that matters is 2 inches behind the ball and 2 inches in front of the ball.....IMPACT!

Enjoy your win!

Having a job and limited time to prepair, I try and at least play the day before. However, if I have time, I try and play...then practice to work on problem areas, then repeat. I try to not just hit balls the day before, especially if I havent played in a while...I'll catch myself tinkering on the range....then go to number one with my head clogged with BS and its hole 6 or 7 before I get my head out of my ass and start playing.

Not golf-specific advice, but:

I would say that it depends on the type of person you are in competition. If you have a tendency to become overly conscious of your swing fundamentals and change your habits or even (for a lack of better words) "choke", I'd practice the fundamentals to ensure you don't mess them up. One of my best basketball coaches would have us practice the most basic things before our games.

On the other hand, if you thrive under pressure then I'd practice brush up on the areas that you are weaker.

And, obviously, the scoring shots (putting and chipping) are always good to practice.

Do whatever it is that you do on any normal day of golf and you'll be fine. Play within yourself and don't try and hit perfect shots all day. Any time you are trying to hit a perfect shot you are changing your natural swing so just go out and play. Good Luck!

Good one! Seriosly though, you can't go wrong practicing your short game.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
