It is used to repair ball marks made when your ball makes an indentation on the green surface. You should have one out of courtesy to all who play behind you.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

It's also called a ball mark repair tool (or ball mark repairer). Do you often hit the green on the fly? Get one and use it.

Where can one get a proper ball mark repair tool? I have a Scotty pivot tool which, from my reading of that article, is not a good tool to use and promotes improper repair of ball marks. Would like to get a proper tool like the one shown but have never seen one like that.

I've been asking that over the last couple years and the best answer seems to be to find them by chance at golf courses. Mine is little stamped aluminum one I got free (for the promise to repair at least 2 or 3 ball marks in addition to my own during my round, a great policy IMO). It's one of the "acceptable" ones, but not the "best." That pictures is still the only place I've ever seen the "best" style ones.

It looks like most of them on ebay are the same as the "bad" ones in those images. There were a couple hits for sets of engraved metal ones that looked like they might be ok, but those were about $5 each so kind of expensive.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

How about a group buy type thing? I've seen on other discussion/enthusiast forums where someone would front a limited production run of something like a keyfob and offer them up at basically cost plus a small portion to help maintain the web site. Maybe someone with contacts or access to a metal stamping or laser engraving/cutting shop could price something out. Am option, with proper approvals, would be to put Sandtrap.com on the tools as well.

Just an idea.

I usually get mine for free or marginal cost at courses, or mixed in with used balls at rummage sales and thrift shops. I'll have to check if any I have are "acceptable" or better.

Something is better than nothing at all! That being said, keep looking around. I found one at a local golf course, they were free with the promise to use it! since they don't wear out too quickly i don't expect i'll need another for a long time!

    • More often than not its my 58 degree wedge. But I might use the sand wedge or the p-wedge depending upon what's between me and the flagstick.
    • My rule of thumb for anything inside a 100 yards is my PW.  Of course, my SW and LW come into the picture when I need to loft it more and especially when I have little green to work with.
    • let me check, I think my volleyball tournament is on 6/21, and we are just driving up and back the same day. I may be masochistic enough to then to play golf on Sunday (6/22). 🤣. 6/21 is 100% out for me.
    • Thank you for sharing that. He was quite good wasn't he? I was curious, so took a look. He played 19 PGA Tour stroke play events in 2000. He was 263 under par (they did point that out at the end of the video). If you look at each event he played in and take the best score in each event for a player not called Tiger Woods, that combined field score was -259. So he beat the field - where the field resets every week - over the course of an entire season. That's mind blowing.
    • If they have the same handicap it doesn't matter what you take 35% and 15% of. If you have two low handicaps, averaging them is generally unwise as I said in my first response: a scratch and an 18 would get 9 strokes, which is silly given that one of the players is scratch.
