LA / San Diego Trip?

My wife and I are driving down to LA to visit family for 10 days (we live in Portland, OR area). We want to do some golfing in LA and also maybe a side trip down to San Diego. Anyone has some good course recommendations for those areas? Would there be a better side trip other than San Diego? Palm Springs?

I would say we are probably going to get 3 rounds in-between family visits. One of which, we could do at a higher rate, say $150+ / round - although that just might be me, if it has a 'spa' attached or close by for my wife (she's fairly new to the game).

When is this trip? And where in L.A. are you going?

Get onto Rancho Park if you get a chance; weekend, non-city resident, riding is $51. It'll be a bit slow, but it's a part of L.A. history. And it's where Arnold Palmer took a 12 during the L.A. Open many years ago.

I recommend The Crossings in Carlsbad, North County San Diego Coastal.

Los Verdes golf course last time I was down, it's a public course that is close to Trump's new course, same views, but 1/4 the price.

if your in San Diego how can you forget about Torrey Pines? that is my home course and if you were to play you would pay around 150$ for the North course and 200$ for South. You can't go wrong with the North course even though everyone hears about the South. The South is brutal and North is in better condition as of yesterday. The Lodge is absolutely amazing and has a spa. Hope this helps.

Torrey Pines has 36 holes near San Diego if you want to go that far South.

Play Maderas in Del Mar or THe Crossings, both great public daily fee in San Diego

Torrey Pines is a must but just show up around 10am after the mens groupd tee off, its easier to get on then

Dublin is right on the mark.  We did that last summer... played the Nicklaus course "Angeles National" (wonderful) in LA, then drove down to San Diego and played Maderas and Torrey Pines.  Maderas is a Johnny Miller course with dramatic elevation changes, and is run by Troon Golf and they do a great job with it.  Its been rated the best course in San Diego County for 7 years.

And Torrey Pines is the most magnificent municipal course you will ever see.  If you try to get a tee time you'll need to do it months in advance, but you can "walk on" early in the morning or in the afternoon.  Getting on Torrey without a tee time is a fun challenge and is worthy of a separate forum thread to see how guys have done it.  You'll get to know the starter very well in the process.

If you play Angeles National and Maderas, driving accuracy is at a premium.  At Angeles National, if you miss the fairway its a lost ball.  Literally.  Fairways are lines with native areas you cannot go on because of the snakes and other creatures.  Here are some links:

I saw a good listing of the golf courses on Golf & fairway www.golf-fairway.com

And you can do a local research for example LA .

The only issue is to find the right course.

Palm Springs has so many great golf course you cannot go wrong there -- it is my pick of the best golfing destinations in the USA,  but maybe not in the hottest months of summer.  North of San Diego (Carlsbad) is Aviara which is a really fine track worth the trip, and my pick of the San Diego area courses.

Aviara is great. If you can swing the out of town cost, go for Torrey Pines though.
