Ive offered to teach my boss the fundamentals of golf and to help her build up a good basic swing because she wants to get out on the course and play with her friends. I know im capable of doing this because i know how the swing is supposed to work, i just cant always do it myself. So im not posting out of un-confindence, rather asking other people that have taught, what they started with and all.. Obviously im going to start with basic fundamentals, grip, stance, posture, ball position etc. Just lookin for others ideas that have done this.

You are not qualified to do this. Advise her to get lessons from a professional. That is their job. You do yours. Does she get you to do her dentistry as well? You are overestimating your abilities.

I dont see why someone who regularly plays golf cannot give someone else who is totally new some basic pointers. Going out and getting lessons before even trying the game out a time or two seems like extreme overkill.

Are you basing your decision on his listed 9.8 HCI? Comparing dentistry to golf is just plain insane.

I agree. Hitting the range together is one thing, but to provide her initial "lessons" is a bad idea in my book as well.

I hit with a friend out here who has been playing for almost a year. He was "instructed" by a friend for the first 6 months, and there is a ton of damage for a good pro to undo both fundamentally and mentally.

its what he said, its not sanctioned lessons, its her calling me when shes free for us to go to the range together for me to show her the ropes. Shes never played before, she wanted to buy lessons but i told her id teach her the ropes if she wanted to she if she wanted to go that route and pursuit the game and she said shed like to do that.

A ton of damage to do for a good pro? You mean like every other golfer in the world who has played for years and years and never taken a lesson? Christ, if you can get her to hit the ball fairly consistently without her having to pay 200+ dollars for a series of lessons, then go for it. If she gets the bug, then she will go take lessons for herself, or more likely become like 90% of the golfing public who relies on help from magazines, books, friends, etc...

Although i know the fundamentals / some intermediate skills , but sometimes i find it hard to teach others including my 7 year old son.

So go to the Pro is better when she wants to start .

If she just want to find out , then may be you can show her .

Learning on your own is one thing. Ingraining bad tips for someone else over months of practice is another.

Yeah, you're probably going to get frustrated teaching her anyways. Anytime one of my friends who doesn't golf decides to tag along I just let them hack at a bucket of balls with my old driver. I used to try to give some basic advice, but it just ended up frustrating me as I was looking at their horrid swing more than concentrating on my own game. I mean, I'll show them a grip, but that's it.

What if she takes lessons from a crappy pro? A good Golfer does not equal a good teacher.

Go for it Kennay you'll do fine...

A good teacher needs to be a good communicator. The title of this thread is "Well here I go." What on earth is that trying to communicate?

In addition, the OP has basically said that he is about to do something he has never done and wants to know how to do it. If he doesn't know the basics as well as he thinks he does, and his overconfidence seems to imply that he doesn't ( because it ain't that simple) he could make this a very unsatisfactory experience for his student. Anyone who has been to a driving range can tell stories that would make you cringe about amateur teachers confusing "students" with BS and misinformation.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

    • Agreed. He’s probably the biggest name now that Tiger’s not around, and he’s been a fun player to watch all these years. I really hope he gets the jacket one day. Ugh, I could do without those two doubles. Good tee shots, then missing greens and not getting it done with the wedges. At least he didn’t dunk two like Cantlay, but four dropped shots in three holes is rough. He’d been going at it very well up to that point. The greens seemed very quick yesterday, as many on the course reported. As for Rory and The Masters, it’s 50:50. He’ll either win one or not, but ruling out the 35 year old world number two is just silly. This “super buffed” talk reminds me of when Tiger got some muscle and people thought he was huge. He wasn’t and Rory isn’t. You don’t have to gain a lot of muscle before it shows, especially in tight fitting t-shirts. He’s got the game to win it. Just have to make it work those four days and not let his head get in the way. Winning professional tournaments is difficult. Winning a major is even more difficult. The good news for Rory is that The Masters has the weakest competition of the majors. The top players are all there, but it’s a smaller field than the other majors.
