Ever have one of those days where everything comes together and you shoot a 63?

This wasn't one of them, and the 63 was on the front 9!!!!!!

I felt like I had never swung a golf club before. 6 penalty strokes, 4- 3 putts, chunking wedges, topping and slicing drives!

It was the worst round of golf I ever remember playing, and of course its while I'm playing with one of my parters for the first time.

The good news is I was so bad, I stopped caring and shot a 48 on the same 9 right afterwards, which normally isn't a great score forme but compared to the 63, I felt like I was on fire.

Scheduled a lesson with the club pro to hopefully figure out why I can't hit any of my clubs all of a sudden.

Someone tell me again, why I keep playing this game?
Oh ya, cause I still love it!!!!

lol... here i was thinking you had the round of a lifetime. and you did, but not in a good way. let's hope this is the only such round.

I hope so too! I've always thought since on any given day one part of my game is on fire, but another one is way off, that one day it would all come together and I'd have a great round. It never dawned on me that it could work the other way too, and they were all off the same day! Wow this game is frustrating!

I didn't shoot a 63 but, i had to take 4 months off due to a wrist injury and the first day i came back i shot a 29 - 35 (64). the next day i shot a 82.

Haha... I shot 100 this past Sunday. Of my 100 strokes... 36 of them came on 4 holes. That's right, I posted scores of 11, 9, 8 and 8. Not in succession, but... still. The 8's were back-to-back on par 4's. The 11 and 9 were on par 5's on the back side.

You shot 29 on one side and 35 on the other... and I had more strokes in 4 holes than you had on either side. That's awesome. CY

Earlier this year I played on a shot knee. Shot 107. Rating/Slope was only 71.6/130 too. I topped or severely thinned most of my shots that day. I hit just 3 shots pure all day, hit 5 fairways, 0 greens, and made just 2 pars. The pars came on the two holes where I actually made it to the area of the green in regulation. The other holes, I wasn't even able to shoot for the greens in regulation, I was shooting for them in one over regulation.

We all have days like that. Its probably some little thing in your setup or youre swing that youre doing wrong which is messing up your swing. Hopefully the pro can help you out.

i had a round similar today. I didn't keep score, but I added it up and not counting the penality strokes (for pace of play I just dropped nearest to the spot where I lost the ball a few times) I shot a 48. With penality strokes something along the lines of a 60.

my partner told me a great line. you have to have bad rounds because they remind you to appreciate the good ones.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Actually, yes. Just last Sunday, I shot a 77....granted on a fairly easy course but today I go out and shoot a 105. I was hitting my drives well but my irons were either dead ground hooks or a high slice. I got so pissed because I was shooting so badly, I could not diagnose my problem during play. When I got home and relaxed and started swinging slowly, I quickly realized I was cupping my left wrist very badly.

During play, I thought I was coming over the top, which I have not done in over two years. You can just imagine how I tried to compensate for this, at the time.

I still had the same swing except I had a very open blade. My 56 which usually goes 85-90yds was only going 45-50yds and way right of target and my 47 PW was only going 75-80yds instead of 115-120yds and again right of target.

Update: Took an hour lesson, and only changed two small things. My weight was too far forward, causing me to fall into the shots, and I was still gripping the club too tightly. I thought I had fixed the death grip issue, but since the change, I now feel like I'm almost going to throw the club down the fairway I'm holding so loose. Fixed my slice, better ball contact more balanced. I never would have figured that out on my own. Every fix I was trying to make, wasn't the problem in the first place.

Played the same 9 after the lesson, triple bogied the first hole because of horrible course management. Decided to forget about it and move on. Proceeded to top 3 consecutive 3 woods and triple bogied the second.

Finally decided to actually apply what I had just spent an hour learning and ended up shooting 3 over the next 7 holes, and even that included choking on two putts inside 3 feet that were for birdies.

Best 45 I've shot as far as ball striking. My only swing thought now is loose grip.

Great bait-and-switch with that thread header!

We've all had days like that, relatively speaking. Heck, I've had rounds where I was positively cruising with only a few holes to play, and suddenly lost all ability to make contact on a simple chip shot. No rhyme or reason, just golf...

Gotta love it.

Cheers,

It's comforting to hear that even players much better than me have those days. The inconsistency of golf is what drives me the most crazy!

    • Day 252: worked on chipping for a while with my chipping net. Worked on low, medium, and high shots. Productive session.
    • Day 180 - 2025-03-29 Not a long time today, but I got my five minutes in jumping and doing some work on the downswing.
    • I’ll just stick to the basics for now - got enough to work on… this is my home practice range. The little clearing in about the center of the photo is roughly 200 yards.

    • Played Musgrove Mill today. 72.3/155. +9 for 15 official holes as 2 holes are closed, and the par 5 16th plays as a converted par 3. We played the first three holes over to finish 18, and parred 1 and2 amped bogeyed 3. The good: hit every fairway. 1 less than normal for the converted par 3, but the second time I have done that this year. My sand wedge approach on 10 after a monster drive hit the pin in the back left corner hit he pin and spun away to 9’, and I missed the putt.   The great: hit 8 GIR and 7 were inside 10’. Needs work: Missed every birdie putt. No lip-outs. Just struggled on fast greens. Three-putted the par-5 9th with the pin on the back tier and jut missed hitting my approach to the proper level and it spun all the way to the front of the green.
