The doctor thing is a bit of a red herring. To me, that's a gift not a tip. Nothing wrong with it, and a great way to cement a relationship, but more of a personal gesture than a financial transaction. As far as tipping goes, I'm perfectly happy to kick in a few more bucks to folks who I know are working hard for **** money -- servers, cabbies, hotel housekeepers etc. Don't tip my barber because he has his own shop and can set his own rates. But I do give him a nice bottle of wine at Christmas, because he's a funny guy.

Stretch.

Interesting arguements, my standard tip for dinner is 20 percent and include the booze for the tip total...i don't recall the last time i left less then 20 percent. I know from many reactions i have gotten from waiters that I obviously am above the norm.

that being said I feel like many service business take advantage of the culture and slip it to you as an extra charge. Example room cleaning at motel, sorry it ain't gonna happen. The tip jar at the coffee shop...cmon. i walked to counter and ordered coffee, you took money and poured it in a cup, i walked away...why would i tip? You sgould smile because it is your job!!!

I pay the people that work for me...because the clients pay me to do the job. I never did understand why that is not the case in some industries.

I don't get at tip for doing my job, so I don't see why someone should get it for doing theirs. Except if I had a really great time.

You're paying a huge markup on the booze already - and about 1000% on soft drinks - tip away!!

Perfect example of why I have my own ideas on tipping. Yesterday, the wife, little girl and I spent the day at Dollywood, TN. We ate at Aunt Granny's Kitchen within the park. It was a buffet. I went in, paid for the meal... about 48.00 for the three of us. The cashier asked if I would like to go ahead and put the tip on the ticket. I asked her why would I do that if I don't even know what kind of service I will get or if I would even get service. She responded, "Good point". We went through the buffet line, helped our plates, sat down just in time for the "server" to ask us what we wanted to drink. The wife and I always get water w/ lemon. He got our drinks and brought them to the table. We didn't see him at our table again the whole time we were there.

Now, how many people would have paid him a previous tip of around $6.00 - $7.00 (15%) for bringing them a stinking glass of water and disappearing? That is why I tip for service above and beyond. No service = no tip! He had the whole time we were in there to do something/anything to earn some kind of a tip, but he probably figured that I had already left him one when I paid for the meal before we even sat down so he didn't have to do anything to "earn" it.

I certainly dont tip my local pro at my country club, he makes enough money so i dont worry about that.
Then again, when being abroad, i like to have some lessons with the locals who are employed mostly by some western golf pro - these guys get paid so little for their employment (like 20% from the original sum) that it would be a shame not to tip - unless he is a complete dork of course.
