Just wanted to add another obvious point to my above post: You do have to eat better in conjunction with a fitness program. So Jared SS is right in that lifting alone isn't going to burn enough fat to get the results one may be striving for.

Why not just take up another sport?
Rowing is probably the thing you'd be looking for.

It builds upper body and leg strength and it gets you fit.

Eat whatever you want afterwards and you'll still lose weight.

No need to be starving yourself or spending time at the gym (weight lifting stunts your growth)

peopple stop giving stupid advice like "eat what you'll like and you'll still lose weight"
nobody said anything about starving yourself. if you read the thread, we said the exact opposite of that.

no dont eat whatever you want. eat a balanced diet in accordance to your work out. lifting weights is a great hobby, one i've enjoyed for years now, and nutrition comes a part of it.
rowing, jogging, lfiting, whatever, your goal in doing any of that is to burn calories. if you want to lose weight, you want to burn more calories than you eat. if you want to bulk muscle, you want to eat more calories than you burn. However, the important key factor is that your calories are composed of a balanced, CLEAN diet, high protein, moderate carbs, good fats, low sugar, etc. You'll pack on some solid muscle if you work out hard and eat right. Likewise, you'll burn some fat off as well.

so no, don't eat whatever you want. eat healthy. you don't have to count every calorie but keep a conscious mind on it. work out hard, dont half ass it.

No need to be starving yourself or spending time at the gym (weight lifting stunts your growth)[/QUOTE]

Weightlifting at age 12 might stunt your growth, but at 17 he's probably reached his adult height and weightlifting will not stunt his growth. Weightlifting is a great thing to do if its done correctly and safely.
Proper nutrition is key to feeling good and gaining muscle. It doesn't matter how much weightlifting you do if you don't have the protein and amino acids to recover properly. Also, don't work a body part out more than once a week. Muscles don't grow in the gym! You have to give your body time to recover.
Another simple thing...3500 cals= 1 pound of fat....so if you eat 3500 calories that aren't burned, guess what. If you start lifting your appetite will likely increase, but that doesn't mean you have to eat everything in sight!

When I said if you take up running you can eat whatever you want, I didn't mean go down to the grocery store and pick up a case of hoho's. What I meant and what I probably should have said is that you definitely should eat a healthy and balanced diet, but you don't have give up the things you like. For me that would be a bowl of chocolate ice cream or maybe a couple of adult beverages at the clubhouse.

Many people also think of weightlifting as trying to lift max amounts. I rarely try and lift max amounts. Always it's about reps coupled with plenty of stretching.

completely false about stunting your growth. When you lift weights your body creates more growth hormones promoting growth. Improper form and not stretching on the other hand could damage discs and prevent you from growing. As long as you use proper form and stretch properly (and dont take steroids) lifting will promote growth.

Agreed, I didn't make the statement about stunting your growth, I was trying to reply to someone elses quote but I goofed it up

Based on your other threads, kevinbomb123, I'd say this starvation / weightlifting regimen is really doing wonders for your golf swing.
