One of the ways I measure how well I played, besides the final score, is not having made a double bogey all day (done that only three times), or not having anything higher than a 5 on my card (once).

Any others?

I attempt to play a few holes at a time. So for instance the first three holes I try to be no more than 2 over and so on! Now your a much better golfer but playing my round in smaller increments has really helped me!

you've only had 3 double-bogey free rounds?

Count how many 6 footers you manage to sink, that's where a lot of the score is made.

Thats not exactly an easy feat to obtain.

Frequent double bogey free rounds would be the mark of a single figure handicapper with more frequency as you go down. Let's think about this. What is bogey golf in reality? It is people playing to 18 over. Throw in 4 pars and where do the other shots come from? Double Bogey or worse. Someone plays to 12 over. By and large there will be a double on the card but in my experience probably 6-9 pars with the odd birdie in the mix. Drop into single figures, say 8 handicap and there is a possibility that no double will be on the card but think how easily it can happen. A teeshoton a long par 4 in the rough, you hack it out and hit your approach which makes the green leaving a long putt. Its a 3 putt...for a 6.

So the original poster is correct in my view if he believes that eliminating double bogeys is the next step but it isn't something you can make happen. It will incidentally happen when you make progress by improving aspects of your game.

Eh, that may be typical, unless you do what i do, go double double bogey than go one over in the next 6 holes ;b

But yea, eliminate those big numbers, key.

Keep the ball in play, if you don't feel comfortball hitting a long shot around a tree than punch out. This got me three times last thursday, stupid me, cost me about 4-5 strokes. Go for center of greens, even if your chipping, chip it to a place were you have an uphill putt, not at the hole. Be smart, you can lower the score greatly.

I stepped on the 18th Tee today after just stroking a birdie on the 17th par 5. I said, well If I can birdie 18 too, Ill shoot my third 79 in 6 weeks. Then pull hooked the shit out of my drive, hit 3 off the tee, skulled my 8 iron across the green, flubbed a chip, chipped on, and 2 putted for an 8. I guess I was tired and hungry lololololol. Ended up shooting an 84. Today's round actually lowered my HI from a 9.2 to an 8.9 also. I had 1 Birdie, 9 Pars, 5 bogeys, 2 Doubles, and an 8.

My "scoring goal" is to shoot a full month in the 70's.

If I could limit myself to one double-bogie per nine , I would break 90 most of the time.

(P.S. I'm a good scramble partner!)

A good statistic to keep (for those who care) is the length of holed putts. I think that this is much more descriptive of my putting than simply counting strokes on the green. Found it in this article recently:

Yes, that's a good one as well. Scorecard will track the average and total distance of putts holed and it's a good indicator of how well you putted (it assumes 3' for all second or third putts - sometimes they're longer, sometimes they're shorter).

Ugh. I'd be happy to get rid of the +3 and +4s. In a good round last week I had 5 pars, 7 bogeys, two doubles, and a pair of back-to-back 8s, one on the front and one on the back. Just knocking those 8s into 6s would have given me a 90...

Not scoring double is hard to accomplish depending on the course you play.

In S. Florida, either OB or water comes into play on most holes. I had only 1 round with no double bogeys, even though it was not my lowest score round. This was after my recent swing change and I was extremely happy with it. I knew the new swing was working.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
