even I wouldn't miss the green from 80 yards out, what's going on with him?

He is bombing the driver though. Go figure.

And his approach shot into 18 was beautiful.

I'm wondering, if tiger makes the cut and goes onto sunday.

A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

Does anyone know why Phil isn't playing this weekend?

He's doing some course design work in Asia

Yeah, it is pretty interesting to see that. There are a few times where he has either put it within a few yards of Dustin Johnson and/or outdriven him, whether it be with driver or 3w. Many have been speculating about his loss of power, but it's clearly still there. So it must be the swing?

Tiger averaged 330 yards off the tee for all drives yesterday according to Shot Tracker. He was by no means short yesterday, he hit a few over 350, a few 340's and a bunch of 330's.

And yet people wonder why Tiger is so short...

He has been short this year because of an erratic swing. Now that he's back on the draw wagon, he's hammering them out there with the rest of the guys.

No doubt. Unfortunately the rest of his game (approach shots & putting) has yet to come along with his driving from yesterday. Haven't seen any of his round so far today.

No, I was talking about last year, too. He was 33rd in driving distance, a far cry from earlier on his career when he hardly dropped out of the top 5. It's good to see him playing with a more penetrating flight, though; he's been 'balooning' it a bit too much in recent years, imo.

And yet people wonder why Tiger is so short...

His putting and irons just haven't been there this week.

Tiger's biggest problem this year is bogies.

Let's look at his last five years, and stats on bogies.

2005: Rank 2 - 2.20 average per round
2006: Rank 3 - 2.04 average per round
2007: Rank 1 - 2.05 average per round
2008: Not ranked. Won 5 of 6 entered tournaments, not winning The Masters. Suffice to say, his bogey average must have been good.
2009: Rank 1 - 1.98 average per round
2010: Not ranked. I summed up his 5 rounds this year, making a total 65 bogies, 3.82 average per round, which would rank him 191st, only beat at the low end of this scale by Brad Faxon with 3.86.

His birdie average has been between 4 and 4.6 the last 4 years (not counting 2008), this year he is currently at 3.88. So he is making a bit less birdies, but not a whole lot. His average was 4.16 in 2009, a year which he won 6 tournaments.

So, what can we make of this?

His average in birdies is 11% less this year than his average the last 4 (5).
His average in bogies is 84% more this year than his average the last 4 (5).

Lastly, let's include putts. His putting average is 1.741, which is just around the same as he always make. His average from 2005 to 2009 is 1.739. No change there.
His short game is perhaps a bit rusty at times, but there is no doubt his problem lies from tee to green. Wayward drives and inaccurate approach shots.

His short game is perhaps a bit rusty at times...

Last year he was first in scrambling and 3rd in sad saves. I never thought I'd say it but it has to be his irons.

Looking at his putting though, he used to be in the middle of the pack in scrambling, which means he was taking more putts,. But he has gotten to the top of the pack in scrambling so to keep his putting even (or higher) he isn't dropping those birdie putts.

Oooohhhh. Looks like he's gonna miss the cut again. He finished even today for +3 total The projected cut, for now, is at +2.

Yikes!!!

Tiger's biggest problem this year is bogies.

This is a spot on analysis and shows how bad his driver has been (not including this round necessarily) and his irons - both long and short.

It is obvious that his current swing is becoming very inconsistent when under pressure. To many moving parts and he will need a lot more reps/tournaments to get the current swing dialed in again if it swing doesn't change.

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
