It wouldn't work unless you mapped out the entire green. The device might give you a decent line based on where the ball is sitting but how would it anticipate slope changes en route?

Just another toy to play with - I'm sure it's fun for one hole but that's about it. Anybody who actually needs something like this to play a full round probably has much more important pieces of his/her game to work on.

I can't see it working, there are too many variations the the App can't factor in, like the speed of the green, the grain, the humidity/dampness of the green, and of course how hard your going to hit it.

Can you imagine how slow your round would be if you got your iPhone out to read every green!

Well, I think it'll be great to help me read the greens...I won't use it while playing a round, but I'll use it on the putting green.

The whole point of practice is to train your eye and body to work together in reading a putt, then stroking the ball at the right speed to hit the line you visualized. You are doing yourself absolutely no good to shortcut that process. All that will do is make the practice session

less useful. And that's assuming that this gadget actually works, which I seriously doubt. You will learn more by simply putting a couple of balls toward the hole. After all we are talking about practice, aren't we? (Come on, tell the truth now ) You can hit as many balls as you want to from the same spot when practicing. Even if this thing worked, it would never be of any real use except in a situation where you only had one shot at the putt. And that is when actually playing, and then it is totally against the rules.

I agree with you in that you need to train your eye and body to work together. That is why I think this is so helpful. I'll be able to look at the slope and visualize the trajectory of the ball...then I can use the app to see if I'm right...I'm not a great putter and I always get the speed wrong...so I never really know how off my aim is.

anyway...this all depends if the app works or not.

Speed of the ball will alter the trajectory of the ball signifigantly, so I highly doubt this could be effective in making putts.. pretty neat idea though.

Let me know if there is a putting system like Tiger Woods 2010 (Speed and break) and that would be awesome.

1) No way an app like that works. At all.

That was my first thought. At a minimum the camera would have to be perfectly level, unless the app can read the device's internel level at the time of the photo and rotate the photo to level it. If it doesn't do that then it will be fooled by apparant break on the green that is actually user-induced tilt.

And yeah, it won't work. Pulling all the necessary info from just a photo is a very difficult goal to accomplish, no way it's making its debut as a smartphone app.

1.It doesn't work.
2. According to the rules of golf, it's illegal anyway.

I would also get pretty ticked waiting for some clown to take pictures of the green and then analyze it on every hole in front of me. Play the game and leave the toys at home.

Not that i agree people should use this (I don't) but what about caddies that read putts for pros? Is that taking away from the skill. They say phil mickelson relies heavily on bones mackay to read for him.

Hi everyone,

The developer here.

I've read through the posts and I appreciate all of the skepticism.

I can tell you that we've gone to extreme lengths to ensure the application provides accurate feedback and data.

Please feel free to ask questions.

Thanks

    • Imma throw a dart in the dark as no one can tell what is happening once every fourth iron shot per your OP. This might sound counterintuitive but if ball position is too far back in the stance folks are known to throw down clubhead steeply. Could be happening. And yes, @billchaois not wrong; clubhead tends to bottom out wherever your pressure is. So slide forward (not sway), then hit.
    • Day 300 (!): did a stack session.
    • Day 24: Missed my weekly round due to a last minute little league makeup game this morning. Managed to get in some backswing rehearsals while grilling sausages for dinner, and then putted around the office/laundry room after dinner.
    • but I don't understand how that's possible you still want your head to stay back you don't want the upper body coming forward and plus I've tried feeling that and it made my fat shots worse and I then tend to pull and sky all my shots especially with driver because I get in front of it dont need force plates to see i finish on my left side
