I'm just getting back into golf after a long layoff. I'm a type 1 Diabetic and need to start exercising more - i've decided to use golf as the first stage of getting more active before i try swimming and cycling.

I'm concerned that using a manually pulled cart may adversely affect my blood sugar and could ruin my game and my father's game as i will be playing mostly with him.

I'm only 30 years old - would you think me to be a bit stupid/pathetic/weak if i pitched up at your course with an electric cart at my age?

Hmm, I'm not sure how old you are, and I'm not going to start guessing. I normally carry my bag, but even walking a lot on the treadmill and doing a lot of calf exercises, as well as cardiovascular activity usually do not compensate for walking on the course. Even though I think that you should carry your bag, it is definitely smarter to get a tri-wheel push cart, then ease into carrying your bag.

No I don't think you are too young. Just go enjoy yourself.

I like to carry in the summer, but most of the guys I play with push a three wheeled cart. We are all mid 30's - 40's.

BTY I like to carry as I find I walk less as I can cut accross the green rather then push around the outside of the greenside bunkers etc.

I'm 36, and have had a couple back surgeries, and let me tell you:

If it makes golf more enjoyable to you, and helps your health, use the electric cart. It took me a long time to build up enough stamina after my surgeries to be able to walk 18 holes even using a push cart. I let my stamina build up, and then starting walking a few holes at a time until I could finally walk all 18, although I will never carry my clubs again, simply because it kills my back and doesn't let me enjoy the game as much.

Do what you have to do to enjoy the game without killing yourself in the process. If people look down upon you for using a cart, that's their problem, not yours.

I am in the minority at my course by carrying my bag. I would estimate at least 50% of members use an electric trolley. I would use one if i could afford one. Get it.
PS, James Black where did you find one for €90?

Franksie,

Definitely get the three-wheel trolley: so much better than the two wheeler I bought 25 years ago. Only question is, would an electric one be more of a bother than it's worth? Could you make it with a pulled three-wheeler?

You might talk to a doctor or athletic trainer for advice on how to approach this. Also, you probably want to carry a snack or beverage in your bag in case you start to have sugar problems on the course.

Overall considerations: You want to get exercise, but don't want to be too tired to swing a club on the last five holes. So trolley definitely, electric trolley maybe.

I'll be 60 this fall, had heart surgery a couple of years ago, and can carry my bag for 9 holes. If the temperature is above 90*F and I try to carry for 18, I'm too tired to swing near the end. I've been thinking about getting a trolley myself.

(True confession: I take a riding cart when I play 18).

Don't worry about nay-sayers. Some people have self-esteem problems, and will try to run you down to make themselves feel superior. It's their problem, not yours.

Focus, connect and follow through!

In the past, I've been yelled at twice for doing this. Apparently, they are afraid you are causing damage from the additional weight. They also claim that you might walk differently, scraping the green with your spikes. Or, that the bag could break and fall on the green. All really lame reasons, but whatever... I don't carry my bag anymore anyways.

Also diabetic and I am confused as to how you believe a manual cart will adversely affect your blood sugar. If exercise is your ultimate purpose then pulling a cart will do more then an electric cart, but ultimately do what will keep you healthiest. You could always ask your doctor about the use of a manual cart

If I was concerned about what people thought of me on a golf course, I would never be able to pick up my clubs again. Fortunately, I really don't care what others think. Walk with a push cart (electric or manual), or ride in a cart, it's no ones business but yours. Get out and enjoy the game. If someone is so lame as to say something, politely tell them to enjoy their game their way while you enjoy your game your way.

I would think the electric version is a bit of a bother compared to the ease of a 3 wheel push cart. I frequently walk 18 on my course (7000 from the tips) and the push cart makes it very easy.
