If I was to buy a set of wedges would I need to get them fitted or does that not really matter where wedges are concerned?

Posted
You could get a fitting on the impact board. The fitter places impact tape on the sole, and lets you hit some shots. If the scuff mark is pretty well centered left-to-right, that means the wedge is a good fit.

If the scuff is toward the heel or toe, you might need a lie adjustment (bending). The position of the scuff mark from the leading edge of the club (front to back) indicates if it's the right bounce for you.

Several of us got this done at a Cleveland scoring clinic at Golf Galaxy.

I'd like to see what others have to say here too...

I was told that vokeys don't bend well, but my clubfitter was able to bend my 52 +3* to match my irons. I'd like to do the same with my 56 and 60, the interaction with the turf is not the same and I can feel the toe catch.

Anyone bend vokeys without concern of breaking?

I'll agree. Definitely get your wedges checked for lie angle. If you are playing a different shaft length, you might want to consider doing so for your wedges as well.

Just had my 56 and 60 bend 2.5* upright. No problems bending the vokeys.

I think a proper fitting for every club would yield a better overall performance. As long as you know you're shaft preference, & bounce & loft requirements i guess a fitting is not a huge thing.

I am actually really intrigued by the Nike 360* fitting. Everything from driver to balls. They take your fw-hybrid-iron yardage gaps into account & also your wedge gap needs. I like the idea of one company being able to fit your bag from the top to bottom.

I had my Vokeys bent 1* no problem. Titleist will customize as follows:

Tour Chrome & Black Nickel
Length: +2" / -1"
Loft: ±1°
Lie: ±2°
Oil Can
Length: +2" / - 1"
Loft: ±2°
Lie: ±4°

My rule of thumb is that if you ask a club guy to bend your club more than 2* you are on your own. Now I can also tell you that I have never broken one when I did it and my friend that has been doing it for 20 years has only seen a couple snap. But he also tells people that if you wanted an x (bent more than 2) degree sw, you should have bought one.

Follow up:

Probably the biggest "fitting" that you need to be concerned with is bounce. In SoFla we play soft courses and need more bounce as a rule. I have played on northern courses where I could have used a low bounce as the ground is firm. You may want to ask your local pro what the best options are for your swing pattern and the types of courses that you play. The guys that play in a variety of places usually own more than one set just for the conditions.

I just had a fitting done with my irons/wedges and my guy did take my Cleveland 50* wedge & bend it, but he didn't do my Cleveland 56* nor my Vokey 60*. He said my 56* & 60* didn't need to be checked (I don't usually take full swings with those clubs anyway).

Full swing or not, they are still interacting with the turf through impact. Played this morning with the 56/60 bent and it made a noticeable difference in the feel of my wedges on quite a few shots.

I would suggest a fitting, and have them check the gaps with your wedges so it fits into your yardages. Not only will you get the right lie angle, etc. but you will make sure that you get the right degrees as well.

I would have them checked for lofts and then hit some pitches on the lie board. You don't want anything dragging on the toe end with these shots.

I think it can't hurt to have them adjusted for lie angle. You want the feel of the club, the way you set up to it to be the same. Otherwise your swing plane will be different than expected.

I say have them checked for sure.

For you I wouldn't think it would matter, just get the standard size vokeys unless you are extremley small/tall

    • Agreed, the way the rule reads is, "If the player’s ball in play is in the teeing area after A stroke."  It states A stroke, not the FIRST stroke on that hole. It specifies this applies to missing the ball and a drive that does not leave that teeing area but does not make a provision for any other stroke. The rules however define the teeing area as "The area the player must play from in starting the hole they are playing." and further states that "All other teeing locations on the course (whether on the same hole or any other hole) are part of the general area." The way I read it is if your ball comes to rest on the tee box you started the hole from you can re-tee it, but not from another tee box on that hole or another hole. An interesting way I think someone could use this rule is if they topped a drive then topped a fairway wood, and had let's say 300 in from a terrible lie, not confident they can get a fairway wood in the air. If the tee box is back on the line for an unplayable drop, they could drop in the tee box and re-tee. Super specific instance, and am not sure if the rule applies after a drop and not a stroke...
    • For clarity, and my edification, if the ball leaves the teeing area, hits something (a tree perhaps) and bounces back into the teeing area, can you retee? I think you can, but I'm not 100% sure. Further, if you skewer one into trees right near the tee, then attempt to play it out of those trees and it hits one of the trees and rebounds back into the teeing area, can you retee? That one I'm not sure about at all.   Edit: looks like it doesn't matter how the ball got there - if it's in the teeing area then you can retee it and move it. So that's a new answer to the "when can you move the ball closer to the hole?" question.
    • Right and in this instance, it's probably not unreasonable, given that the people doing this likely play matches against each other under those rules, so they should within their group have handicaps consistent with how they play. If they play anyone who's not willing to accept the "within the leather" thing, then they're only hurting themselves. IMO vanity caps are only an issue if handicap is determining eligibility for something and someone better, but with a higher index is squeezed out as a result.
    • OK, I didn't think gimmies were allowed in stroke play.
    • You can post your most likely score, Matt. That's fine.
