Played yesterday with a couple of guys who are members at the muni where I'm a member. These guys are hacks. I don't mean that in a derogatory way it's just they are terrible golfers. If that isn't bad enough their golf etiquette is awful. They aren't totally ignorant of etiquette but rather I imagine they see themselves as working class guys and aren't going to put on airs. As you can imagine no one at the course likes them very much. The staff like them well enough but that's because they are paying customers. I've played with them before so I knew what to expect, but it occurred to me that if they'd simply pay a little more attention to etiquette they'd get a much warmer reception from the other golfers. The few times I've played with them I'll try to show them what to do by example, but these guys are so thick they aren't aware that there is an underlying reason for what I'm doing. To be honest though I doubt they'd take anything I'd show them to heart simply because of their aforementioned working class joe mentality. One of these guys has to be ADHD, and I'm sure he's used to being ostracized, so me pointing out how it's his behavior that is making him unpopular won't do any good. His buddy, who might could learn, would probably stick by him out of loyalty, so working on him might be a waste too. I'm nice to them so we know each other by name, but ultimately I don't think they'll change (they haven't in the 2 years I've known them). I've never liked the attitude aspect you sometimes find in golf, it's one of the reasons I like the muni, but these guys are pretty much a menace on the course. If not physically at least mentally. I guess I just need to avoid them like everybody else, but like I said something in me balks at taking that position, but honestly that looks like the most sensible thing to do? I guess this is why you end up joining a private club, so that you know that facility deals with people who don't want to follow the rules of convention.

An example:
As we're finishing on the 17th green; it takes them a while around the green because they go coast to coast a lot, and then once on the green they putt a lot; I hurry off to the next tee because there is a twosome behind us waiting to tee off (it's a par 3). The guys stand beside the green talking about something for a couple of minutes. I can't tee off because they are out in front of me and they guys on 17 can't hit because they are about 5-10' off the green. They finally make it to the tee. I said to them how they were well within the other group's range and easily could have been hit. The ADHD guy says he doesn't care if he got hit cause he has a high threshold for pain. I ask him if he's ever been hit by a well struck ball on the fly and he says oh yeah a good 4 or 5 times. I hit and figure my time in purgatory is almost up and that these two are way beyond reach.

I think you answered your own question.... Avoid them. I used to play with a guy who would show up in work boots & a wife beater! We played at a shitty little goat track so they didn't care what people wore. He would trudge thru the traps without raking them & stomp all over the green in his boots when he putted badly (Which was always). I tried to teach him the proper way to act on the course but he just couldn't/wouldn't get it. Finally, I just had to cut him loose.
my get up and go musta got up and went..

If you think it's a lost cause, why bother?
It's a sad fact of life that some people just can't be helped.

You guys are right, I just need to avoid them. Nobody likes them and they get treated pretty shabbily by the other members. All in all this treatment is deserved. I'm probably the only guy there besides the staff who is nice to them. It's possible if I gave them the cold shoulder like everyone else they might leave and find somewhere else to play. They did mention how they like it at the muni because people are nicer there than other local courses. LOL!

This is the courses fault as they need to ensure players fall in line. Hanging about at the back of a green is an example of slow play. It's the basics.

You should avoid them because inevitably a situation will arise where you end up in the firing line for something they have done just because you were part of the group.

Well you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

puitting a different spin in case you feel the need to try or get stuck with them. Avoiding them is the easy answer since you aren't responsible for them, though the post itself makes it seem like you do care and are a friendly sort.

However if you are around them you could approach things to be more obvious to see if they are oblivious or truly don't care. Take the standing around the green thing. You heading off to the green is fine but that doesn't tell them they are doing anything wrong if they don't feel a connection with you as their clique. If you are faced with it again say something to the effect of "Fellas we're holding up traffic let's get moving before we get hit". You can gauge whether they have any interest at all by how they respond. If they say "I'd like to see them try I'd whip their butts" or "We paid our money we'll stand here as long as we want" then you are right a couple of lost causes. It all depends on if they are just ignorant or uncaring.

They take too long lining up a putt come up with something humerous that gets the point across "If you go down on three like spiderman I'm putting it on youtube". They start taking too long "Sure am glad we don't pay by the hour out here, we'd be going broke", "you gonna hit that ball or make love to it" Basicly can try to be funny and attempt to get the point across at their level without being confrontational.

I think you're right. I've tried to be more circumspect in pointing things out to them. I need to be more direct. Then they can do as you say and take an interest or show me that they truly don't care about golf etiquette. Then if they don't care I can explain to them why I won't be playing with them anymore. I think part of what's been bothering me is that while I want to be nice to these guys (they aren't bad people) their behavior really bothers me and it is beyond painful to have to play with them with the way they approach the game. If they changed their approach I probably wouldn't mind playing with them. I don't expect everyone to be good, but if you aren't you really need to make up for that by being a good golf partner. All in all I think this is an honesty issue for me and frankly I'm not being honest with them the way things stand right now.

Just avoid them and don't worry about it..

Good strategy. Maybe they'll quit some day and there will be a collective sigh of relief.

    • Day 87 (27 Jul 25) - Made it an easy session with the wedge this afternoon, worked on staying in the shot and not lifting out - split between low spinners and higher floaters.
    • Shot my new low 72 (par 70) today. Had 5 birdies, also a new best, which included a hole out from the bunker on par 3 6th, and another hole out pitch from 15ish yards on the long par 4, 15th.  Got a couple of other good breaks. Except for an OB drive on 14th (and ensuing double bogey), not much went wrong. All in all I might have used up a year's worth of luck in a single day.
    • Back in the saddle after vacation.  Day 1: played 18. Did not have it, but still battled to an 82. Felt closer to a 90, but that’s fine.
    • Yes, I have seen this from the older crowd that play the 4,700 yard tees and want to know why they get less strokes from there. Always trying to game the system 🤣
    • Day 300 - 2025-07-27 Good 44-ball segment. GSPro was acting goofy, so I just put it on the Quad. Then I hit a bunch of low spinners. Hit 14° down to 9.8° down, with the average closer to 12.3° or so. Focused mostly on the backswing. Right knee good, hands roll up and out a little before laying off (FAR).
