Everytime I've seen somebody hover at address they've topped the ball, including myself.

I always ground the club, it's part of my address of the ball. I set the club in position with my right hand, set my feet, then bring in the left hand, make sure my feet are still set how I want them and my grip is good, and then start my backswing.

I start with the club on the floor. Then tap it a couple times, then waggle for about 5 minutes, followed by a few Mike weir style take away moves, then draw a little stick man on the face, followed by more waggling while I hum the national amthem backwards, re ground the club, waggle it, then swing.

If I do this correctly I hit a straight drive everytime

I like to start the club as close as possible to where I would like to make contact with the ball. That means on the ground, with the ball dead center in the middle of the club face. I think it gives my eyes a little assistance in finding the ball again.

I can't quite answer the question because I ground my irons, but my driver hovers.

Same. I ground all clubs except the driver. I do sometimes ground the driver, but that's a discipline issue I'm working on.....

Tried hovering the irons back a couple of years ago and it drove me crazy. I don't mind it with the driver but can't do it with the rest...

My answer is yes and no. I shift into my impact position with the the leading edge of the club slightly off the ground like it will be striking the ball at impact. This establishes my left shoulder to ball radius. Keeping this radius I shift back into my address position and let the club rest on the ground. I then start my backswing.

The problem when you rest the club on the ground first without making any adjustments is that you establish a left shoulder to ball radius that strikes the ground before the ball.

I hav tried both and personally preferred grounding the club. I tend to regrip the club a little while at address (not as much as Sergio), and I found that often jerked the clubhead all over the place when I hovered.
