I live outside Portland, I agree that Pumpkin Ridge is great! I also enjoy The Reserve, and regularly play Stone Creek (best course for the money by far-)

Going to play Bandon Dunes in a couple weeks, can't wait!

I envy you for being able to play Bandon! I want to go there eventually. Where is Stone Creek? I am fairly new to the area (1 year) and bad with directions! How much is it to play Stone Creek?

Dammit. I wanted a picture next to that bloody thing. Wonder why it was missing for all those months.

I'd be up for playing again next year, sure. I hope the sign is still there.

In my youth, I was a caddy at Pleasant Valley in Sutton, Ma. Played it a few times while in HS, (1960's) Fond memories.

Left the area 1966.

Visited the area in 2001, and played the course again. Have made a point of getting up there at least once a season since. Were I forced to choose only one place to play, this would be it.

Here are my favorite courses:

Nice choice on #4! I've walked that course several times watching different tourneys. Love it. Can't beat the beauty of the location, either. I've been trying to find a way to play it for years. Alas, as a grad student I'm poor as hell, so none of the courses mentioned on this whole thread, let alone Poppy, would be feasible on a government-grant budget.

Question: Where is #8 on your list? (Eagle Ridge) I know Miller's from here (Utah) so I wondered if it was close...

I'm not near as traveled or experienced as it seems most of you are, but nonetheless here are the best courses that I've played in my 1+ years. I've been very fortunate to have been invited to a few private clubs by some friends encouraging me to keep playing. I hope to continually add some of the courses that have been mentioned before (if I can ever afford them) to my "list" and venture out to play some courses that are not as recognized. There is one course that I'm looking forward to playing soon, Spessard Holland, that is on the Melbourne coast just south of here. It's a par 68, but they say that nearly every hole has an ocean view of the Atlantic. I guess it's as close to true links golf as I can get to right now. So, take this for what it's worth.

1. Fightin' Joe Course - Muscle Shoals, AL...It's on the Trail and from the tips is 8092 yards, 78.7/138 par 72. I played from the more reasonable 6630 orange tees, but I did play #12 from the tips which is a 716 yard par 5, just to see what it was like. To put it in perspective, it's about 275 yards just to reach the forward tees. It was a fun Scottish-style course.

2. Silver Lakes Country Club - Barstow, CA
3. Highlands and River Courses - Huntsville, AL (also on the Trail)
4. Orange County National Panther Lake - Orlando, FL
5. The Ledges Country Club - Huntsville, AL
6. Tuscawilla Country Club - Orlando, FL
7. Stoneybrook East - Orlando, FL
8. The Disney courses - I get the cast member discount, so $35 to play Disney will always rank them on my "list"
9. West Winds Golf Course - Victorville, CA...It's a 9-hole military course on an old Air Force base in the high desert. There are two sets of tees on every hole that change the par on a couple. It's nothing too special, but the views are great and it's rarely busy.
T10. Weymont Run Golf Course - Weyauwega, WI...Another 9 hole with great scenery and not too much traffic.
T10. Cedar Ridge Golf Course - Decatur, AL...A sentimental pick because it's the first golf course I ever played on back home.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
