Sneaking on Private Courses

Was talking with a buddy yesterday at the bar about this topic and read a thread on another forum about it, got me thinking, any of you guys snuck on to any of the top courses in the country?

Spare me all the "unethical behavior" or "thats stealing" talk because I could really care less. This thread should be interesting and fun to read the stories of those golfers passionate enough to risk getting in a little trouble to say they've played some of the best courses we're not allowed to.

I snuck on to the 15th at Cypress once on a late summer evening as it was getting dark a few years back. Only brought a 7 iron with me, hit a couple balls and I must say, that course is in the most ridiculous shape I've ever seen any course. Every grain of sand in the bunkers looked like it was precisely put there by hand and the cut of the hole was absolutely perfect. Got a little nervous walking right below the clubhouse to the 16th tee where I hit one in the ocean, but it was well worth it just to see what one hole on that course looks like. Someday I'll tee it up honestly out there.

How did you go about sneaking on? Did you have to jump a fence or something, or did you just walk onto the 15th?

As a kid I would sneak on to a private course near my house. It's only 9 holes and during the days in the summer there was hardly anyone there. You could play 3-7 (really mid 2-7 if you wanted) without going close enough to the clubhouse to be spotted. We'd have our clubs with us in the woods and once we saw a break in a few holes we'd play like crazy. Must have been weird to see kids walking down the street with their clubs then disapear into the woods. Years later my high school golf team played our matches there and my coach (member of the club, hence why we got to play there) asked me how I knew the holes already if I wasn't a member.

Never snuck on to a famous private club though. I don't know if I'd ever have the chance.

Theres just a small wooden fence you can step over that has a sign saying no trespassing, ("you mean this isn't Pacific Grove Muni?"), few steps up the hill and you're on the tee box thats hidden in the trees.

A group snuck in ahead of my group and held us up a tad on every hole on a very upscale course. Didn't say anything, but was tempted. Forgot what they did on the 18th to avoid discovery.

My in-laws live just off the third hole of a course, and if it's not busy I'll take a couple of clubs and knock the ball around every once in a while.
10 years ago I used to live in an apartment complex that bordered a golf course. The course was public, and by no means special in any way. On top of that, the owners had a horrible reputation for being rude (even to paying customers). Shortly after I moved in, my roommate and I tried to just walk on and play. This particular course had few trees, and the hole we started on was pretty much on the complete opposite side of the course from the clubhouse. As you would guess, before my roommate and I had reached our first green, someone on a cart drove out to read us the riot act. We just laughed it off and walked home.

Nothing in a bunch here, i would rather work hard and afford to play on private courses. Just because i have pride dosn't mean i dont like to "live a little."

I don't know where I could sneak on.
I don't see the point driving for 40 minutes to try sneak onto a golf course.

My old course has turned into a muni and I walk onto the first teebox and play, nobody has stopped me and I doubt they will.

Fair enough however the inevitability of people moralising in this topic is almost a crime in itself!

I wonder if this is something that happens more often than one would suspect?

I think if you were to do this you better be confident in yourself to outrun the staff and possibly the police haha. I don't know if any course around here are even worth attempting doing that though. If there was, it would make for a good story down the road.

Edit: This isn't really something that I'd partake in, only because the reward is not worth the possible consequence.

Congressional is the only place near me I haven't be able to get on yet but they would make sure you got a ride with police. I think I will continue to try to get on the legal way.

If you define "sneaking on a golf course" as living a little than you need to get out more. Maybe try sky diving or bungee jumping I would define that as living a little. I'd bet you were the kid who'd go to the movies and pay for the PG movie and then sneak into R movie now that's living. I'm impartial to this thread but a lot of people don't agree with breaking the law so get used to people posting they don't agree with you.
