i'm a high handicapper so may be i don't know what i'm talking about. With my ping G15 wedges (UW, SW), i feel that there is not much spin hitting into the green even if i use good ball like pro-v1. is this because the G15 has the conforming groove?

Will i see drastic difference if i change to vokey wedge?

If the Ping has the new grooves, and the Vokey has the new grooves, they'll pretty much be the same. Is it from the fairway, or just the rough the ball doesn't seem to spin?

Ive never really like Ping wedges, Im a very high spin player and ive used a few ping wedges, but they never really worked.

My brother is a PING player, he loves there gear, but he did go and buy new wedges, because he felt like they did not give him enough spin, he nows plays mizuno wedges and loves them!

I've been playing Ping wedges for years and they've always worked fine for me. I personally doubt that scrapping your Ping wedges for Vokeys will correct the problem. Since you're a high handicapper I'm inclined to believe your problem spinning the ball is more likely a technique issue than a club issue.

Not being funny but there is a massive difference between the G15 SW/UW/LW compared to the Tour-W wedges (or Vokey etc)

When I got my G10's even as a beginner the pro fitting me said to only get 4-PW and get the SW in the Tour-W, as it did not change the cost and I would have more feel and control in these clubs due to the G10 (same for G15) having such a large sole = them not being very good for the type of shots you would hit with a SW/UW/LW etc.

A Ping Tour-w, Vokey, Cleveland or more traditional wedge may be what you are looking for

:tmade: M2 10.5° - Fujikura Pro 60 - Stiff
:tmade: V-Steel 18° - M.A.S Ultralight- Stiff
:ping: G400 4-UW - AWT 2.0 - Stiff
:tmade: Tour Preferred 58° ATV - KBS Tour-V - Wedge
:scotty_cameron: Select SquareBack - 34" - SuperStroke MS 2.0

bingo. with the wide sole, as far as im concerned i cant seem to hit that spinning shot where the club bites the ball and goes throught the turf particularly well. as far as my sand wedge is concerned, whether its the blade style look, or its narrow sole, i can hit a larger variety and more spin on mu shots. just my two cents.

07 Burner regular flex. (my dads-doing wonders with it) :D
supersteel burner steel shaft strong 3 wood
R7 draw 5 wood
Rapture 4-pw uw. Red dot. <3

  • 2 years later...

can anyone discuss how the Ping G15 SW works as an actual wedge out of the sand - what is the bounce? Is there enough bounce like your typical tour wedge?  I see that the SW is 55-degrees.

I've been using a beat up Vokey 56 and 52 gap, but they're getting so bad looking that I'm thinking of buying stock U and SW G15.

I use G15 irons and use the SW out of the sand. I believe it's 54* with 12* bounce and works well from good sand. Although some of my courses have that horrible cart path hard Hoosier sand where I use a low bounce wedge for those courses. I don't even carry my G15 gap or lobs as I use my Vokeys for them because they have much better feel to me than the G15s

good to hear - I shelled out about $65 for each (U and SW) Golfsmith - should be in the mail soon - I think having similar shafts as my full set will give me some consistency from 90-110 yds.  I think its time to scrap those old wedges. If anything, I'll add a 58 or 56 to have around the green/sand and ditch my 4-iron or fairway wood.

I have been using for years Ping clubs. all my Woods and irons and Hybrides.zijn Ping
But the Ping purchased felt like old wood. So I made two years ago me reglar TFC 129 shafts exchanged for Miazaki purchased. And the result is that my distance is increased to 30 yards. And it feels so full of energy. Only my Ping SW that did not work fine even with the Miazaki shaft did not give much improvement. Now I have a few cheap Acer XB wedge bought 56/60.64. total $ 60 And it plays great. So it proves that expensive clubs you can not always better late game.
My father taught me. You never play as good as you clubs. His second statement was: We all want to learn golf. And if it is, we want it all in one day teach. His solution is a lot of practice and play so much as possible.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
