A lot of recommendations to drop the 3 and 4 iron, but having owned the X-22s myself, the long irons are not as unplayable as people claim.

You need to establish for yourself if the long irons are just wasting space in your bag. As Gerald says, remove them and suddenly the 5 iron becomes your longest iron...

Your wedge set up is a bit uneven in gaps .... PW 45* - AW 51* - SW 54* - LW 58* .... you might consider to replace the AW or easier to have it bent 49* or 50*.

I purchased my pings without a 3 iron and I have been hitting the 4 iron so well lately and the hybrid not as well, I am starting to think I should have picked up the 3....

What model Pings are you playing?

Judging by the sole-width on most Ping irons (especially the 'G' series), I'm surprised that hybrid replacements are even considered.

I10's 4-SW. Just enough forgiveness for me and hopefully the ability to shape at some point. I sort of wish I would have passed on the sand but I hit it well so it is not too bad.

im sorry but you need atleast a 4 iron to play golf and I would even say get the 3 iron too. All these talks of only having 5-pw is funny.

I don't think this is accurate.

well you can get 3 and 4 hybrids but honestly they dont hit near the same as a iron. They dont have backspin and dont land softly. If you only have 5-pw you arent really going to be hitting many greens outside of 165 yards! You can hit a 5 iron about 165-170 anything more like 170-175 out and you need a 4 iron. I just think the distances are too great between hybrids and irons. Like I can hit a 3 iron about 185-190, a 3 hybrid I hit about 205-210 with roll.

Thanks sam. So if I were to go with a fw what would you suggest if I have a 3 and 4h?

I prefer a 3 because I can hit it off the deck on par 5s and get it close if not on the green in two. I'm not as long off the tee as I used to be so I need all the help I can get.

I beg to differ. The 3 and 4 irons are the least used clubs in my bag and for that reason I took them out so I could carry more wedges - which I use much more frequently. Most golfers these days use a fairway wood or a hybrid in place of the 3-4 irons. I can't speak for other manufacturers but most of the Ping iron sets on the market these days are sold without a 3 iron, and very often, a 4 iron as well.

Then someone in this situation should consider a 5 hybrid. A hybrid plays distance wise similar to one iron longer.

I hit my 3 hybrid 205-210 as well, except it is so high it practically drops straight down and doesn't roll. I thought this was typical for hybrids.

So do you all suggest I drop the 3i, and keep the 4h and 4i because technically the 4h is one club up from the 4i?

I suggest you hit hybrids, fairway woods and your irons and see which ones you feel most comfortable with. Hybrids are known for being an easier club to hit so start there. Go to a pro shop or travel to the nearest golf store and test some out. A place with a outdoor range would be best. Figure out the distance you need to complete your set and go with the loft that suits your needs. Pretty obvious response but you only know you.

or just go buy the 17° fairway wood like I told you and learn to hit it....more than likely it is all you will need in your current set up.

eh, 4 iron...definitely keep in the bag. 4 iron is a 210-220 yard stick for me. the distance between that and my 5 wood (at around 230ish) isn't too far off so I rarely end up needing a 3 iron. I'm more confident with my 5wood than the 3 iron.

3 iron, i never use...if i'm teeing off on a long par 3 or a short par 4, i'll consider it but most times I can get by hitting a 4 iron. On a lot of courses around here, ill stick my 52* wedge in and take the 3i out. I should consider doing this permanently.

    • More actual thoughts on the articles: Oh boy. I taught 5SK, and before that, I was S&T certified. Those experiences, for many good instructors, are additive. They're not "all" that they are. If I were to go through Scott Cowx's certification, or Dr. Kwon's, or James Ridyard's, or whomever's… I wouldn't be a "method" teacher any more than I am now. I'd be adding tools to the toolbox. He says there are "system" teachers, "non-system" teachers, and method teachers. Which one am I? A "non-system teacher"? So, I don't have any systems or structure? Or am I a "system" teacher with a bunch of branches and if/then/else statements? I don't know. The physics thing as it relates to S&T… yeah, that's already been discussed. Huh? Brendan, sorry, that part is bogus AF. Of course the arms go "around" somewhat. It's back, up, and in. Down, out, and forward. Plus, again, "energy can either be created or destroyed" isn't even right, as many of you have said. It's "neither" and it can be transformed, too. Plus, as others noted, that's typically a closed system: in our bodies we transform sugars and other things to create movement, energy. I'm going to move off this before I get totally annoyed… "These are the pontifications of a method" — no, the specific example he cited is the way everyone who has ever played good golf moves their hands - back, up, and in. The clubhead moves that way, too. I've seen this happen. This part might be the most accurate part of the article (it's no longer clear whether he's talking about this fellow or just talking in general here.) "Now here’s the sinister thing: The overwhelming information is by design." — If the instructor is as incompetent as he says, he's likely not doing any of this "by design." He doesn't sound bright enough to do so. WTF does that have to do with anything? Probably happens to some extent sometimes, but is that the instructor's fault? Or the student for not recognizing it? Also, again, this instructor doesn't seem to be bright (not that this article even really talks about the instructor anymore), so… I doubt he's doing all of this intentionally. People are found out eventually. I'm at a point where I get a lot of referrals from people who have noticed their friends playing better golf, and ask. Or people want to brag about their improvements, and that sells their friends. "As a result, these players couldn’t play golf." — Huh? I think he just observed when he was there. Not that he went out of his way to watch. 😄
    • I am dying..🤣 Can one of yall come and pick me up from the floor?
    • If you can’t, attack it. That’s the new age ideology.
    • Is it possible that he writer is full of shit himself? "After months of listening and watching...". Yeah right, cuz that's so normal for writers do that just to get a single article out of the massive endeavor. I mean unless you are angling for a Rant-Pulitzer (Yup, it is a thing.. like, totally).
