On the third day of my golf vacation. I started out with a 40 on the front nine so the possibility is already in the back of my mind. I played about the same until I birdied the par 3 15th. Now I'm really thinking about it. The 16th knocked me down a notch when I three put for my only double bogey of the round. Had a sand save on the 17th. It all came down to the par 5 18th. I knew I had to birdie to break 80. On my third shot I spent about a min. talking to my gap wedge. I hit it to within three feet and made the put for a 79. All in all I had 3 birdies, 5 pars, 8 bogeys, and one double. I hit 9/14 fairways, 7 G.I.R., got up and down 3 times, and had 32 putts. A penalty on the first hole and two 3 putts, but what a day.

Congratulations. I'm still on the outside looking in. I've scared the 70s a couple of times, but always managed to let it slip away.

+1 I played the first nine in 38 about a month ago and have had numerous 40's for nine, but have always managed to implode on the back nine.

Congrats again

Congratulations! How far was the deciding GW shot?

@ bwdial: Have you played Silver Lakes? I think it will be my next stop on the RTJ Golf Trail.

Yes, but it was fourteen years ago... and they had just aerated the fairways, so it was like there were a million and a half little turds all over the fairways. That kind of ruined the experience for me. The two Trail courses I've played the most are down in your neck of the woods... Capitol Hill and Grand National.

These are the only two I have played so far. Looking to take in a few more though.

17 hole course? :)

I realized my mistake after it was too late to edit my post. Checked the scorecard again, and it should have been 6 pars instead of 5. I knew it wouldn't be long before someone called me out on it.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
