New Ping putter arrived today (bought on Ebay) ...it has what looks like a bolt in the shaft and a grip different from the Pings I tried in the store....

I wouldn't worry about the grip, as it could have just been changed... The bolt seems really odd however... It wasn't mentioned in the description on eBay?

Weird...Sweet putter though. I would just have it reshafted and regripped with the classic ping smoothie.

I'd contact the seller about that then because I'm pretty sure that isn't how they come new... Aside from the bolt, does it seem new? Also, as said above you could just reshaft it.

None of my 5 Ansers, one of which is an Anser 2, have that bolt or whatever it is in the shaft. It'd be nice to see a picture of the head, as I can't tell from the pictures on your post whether it's new or not. I know the grip says Ping, but that doesn't look like the original grip on my Anser 2.

New? That club is nowhere near new. The grip is wrong, the clubhead shows clear marks of wear and for whatever reason, someone put a bolt through the shaft. You should complain to eBay about that buy.

That head looks new to me - a bit old, but I don't see the "clear signs of wear" the other poster was talking about. Although I haven't seen a Ping grip quite like that one before I have no reason not to believe it's not a new putter. Gotta wonder about that thing in the shaft though.

The head is new enough.

The shaft and grip, I'd say, are from a Ping fitting putter, the ones they have in shops where the lie is adjustable so that people can work out what colour dot they need.
Also, as said above you could just reshaft it.

What do you mean "just" reshaft it?

Do you know what is involved in reshafting a Ping Anser? The guy didn't order a frankenputter. The bolts weren't part of the deal. He has every right to be mightily pissed off.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

it looks like a club used for "fitting", just by the way the grip is. is it a two-piece shaft? maybe for height adjustments?

just my two cents worth...

To assess this in a clearheaded, mature manner, I must say that bolts in the shaft are a critical issue.

i agree it seems like a fitting club or a frankenstein club. That grip is for fitting sizes not sure about the bolt but might have something to do with fitting

Of course he has every right to be pissed off... my first piece of advice was to contact the seller. Having it reshafted may be an option if he is otherwise happy with it and doesn't feel like having to deal with the entire return process. No need to get all crazy!

Thanks for the help everyone....I contacted the seller today and passed on the comments and his reply was this is a "custom" putter....and he insists that it is NEW.... so I shared the responses and was called a liar... then I was told that I was trying to rip him off???? Next I was told I had to provide the names and numbers of the "pro" golfers that told me this....so I opened a "case" against the seller... the seller has agreed to return my money and return postage now that I have an open case pending.....I mailed the putter and got a confirmation number...........thanks again everyone...

Glad that you got that resolved... any chance you could give his eBay ID so that others can avoid purchasing from him?

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
