All,

I recently posted a question about ball spin. People were posting that high spin balls exaggerate fads and draws with the driver. As a test today, I played a Pro V1x which according to Golf Digest has the most wedge spin of any ball. Check out the link:

http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equip...alls_spinchart

I played the Pro V1x for the front 9 & didn't notice any thing out of the ordinary with my drives as far as ball flight left to right. I did notice that my trajectory was a little lower than normal with the driver. I did notice that my wedge shots did not roll out much at all. I actually shot my all-time low of 40 (+4) on the front. I switched to the TF Gamer v1 the back 9 & again didn't notice much difference in ball flight from left to right & did notice the gamer rolled out a little bit more.

Question...to people that switch back & forth between balls? Can you really notice a big difference in your drives? If I have a wild hook or slice, I can tell it was just my swing

I can't tell a difference between balls. I usually use either Nike PD High or Slazenger RAW Distance Feel's. I don't notice a difference. When I pull out the driver my slice is just as bad. When the ball hits the concrete greens most courses around me have it still bounces off, lol. If you slice the ball, it's not because your ball is a high spin ball and suddenly switching to a low spin ball will make it fly straight, if it were that easy tour players would never be in the rough. Your swing and overall ability accounts for how good your shot is, IMO.

I never understood those studies Golf Digest keeps publishing. The Pro V1 launches lower and spins more. Titleist says so and I've never met a golfer who would say otherwise.

Anyway, you're a bogey golfer (assuming your posted number is accurate)... you likely don't strike the ball consistently enough to tell the difference. Choose a ball from the green backwards.

If I were you, I would worry more about the compression characteristics of the ball.

All,

The Pro V1x has less spin off the driver than the Pro V1. Trying to compare wedge spin with driver spin is pretty much impossible with the modern golf ball. It's designed so that golfers with higher swing speeds can get similar spin numbers off the driver with the V1x as the player with a slightly lower swing speed gets with the V1. Both are supposed to be fairly similar around the green. That's what I read anyway. I don't use either so I'm just going on hearsay.

If you hit a ball really well, I mean REALLY well, there will also be a lot of backspin at a soft rock like a Titleist DT Solo or a Srixon AD 333 ...... they then will land on the green with a hop and a stop, but if you hit it a bitt less perfect, the V1 (or similar) will also hop and stop and the other one would bumb on 10 orso yards.

I think for most of us the 10 yds forward bumb isn't too bad, as most of us tend to be short on our approach shots.

Problem with high spinning balls is that they not only add more backspin, the side spin is also greater, so if you lots of fades and draws with a let's say DT Solo or Pinnacle Gold, you will have lots of hooks and slices with a high spin ball.

After switching a lot between low spin and high spin balls (mostly because some of the low hc's around me told me to do) and ended up with the in between balls like the NXT Tour and the ball I really prefer is the Bridgestone e5 !

Maybe when I improve to a really low hc, I might have profit from the V1 (not the V1X, because my swingspeed doesn't compress these balls enough).

Just pick up a box of D2 Feels-affordable, good distance, surprisingly good on approaches and around the green. It's what I play when I can't find a good sale/price on a urethane ball.

I notice I drives longer with Pinnacle Gold FX ball. The ball seems to roll more than any other balls. IT means less spin.

Titleist ProV1x seems better to play around the green. IT does have more spin because the ball seems to bite the surface.

    • Is there a rule against these guys using their phones during rounds? There's no way I could just stand around waiting during these interminably long rounds when I could be watching earwax removal, cyst popping, or ingrown toenail removal videos like I usually do

    • I've never had my entire bag walk off before. One time (about 15 years ago) somebody did nick my range finder off my bag. I had a Bushnell Range Finder in the hanging clip-on hard-case thing on my bag. Then at the turn somebody snatched the rangefinder off my golf bag, left that hardcase behind. It happened while me and my group were inside getting hot-dogs and such. I've heard it has happened to others as well. Since then I kept my rangefinder in my golf bag's pouch for it rather than dangling on the bag in the hard case.
    • I disagree on this. Speed training is just moving something fast, it doesn't usually require much loading. This is why when you train for body building or upping your PB's on amount you can lift it doesn't translate to speed. Actuality they can interfere with the adaptation of one another.  Yes, generally weightlifting will improve grip strength. In a lot of cases grip strength is a limiting factor on your PB's on increasing weight. If your hands give out at 300-lb deadlift, but your hamstrings are good for 400-lbs you will never PB. That is why most people use grips when lifting, to eliminate the grip strength issue.  That doesn't necessarily translate to clubhead speed.  There are plenty of golfers, who have never touched a weight, can swing fast. I think grip strength correlates because when they test PGA tour players, they have been hitting golf balls for decades. It's something that gets developed over hours and hours of practice. When the grip strength trend was going on twitter/youtube last year or what not, they tested the grip strength of MMA fighters, many can't crack 120 lbs. They work out way more than me, I crack 125 lbs+ with my off hand. My dominant hand is 165 lbs.  You have high schoolers with 120 mph club head speed, who probably don't have that high grip strength yet.
