I've played my Yonex irons forever, quit playing for 10 years, knocked the dust off, new grips, I'm usually using the same club or one less than people I play with. Of course being left handed and living in the middle of no where Iowa doesn't give you many options. I just bought a Honma 3 wood, guess I like the Japanese stuff. It'd be like a death in the family if something ever happened to the irons :)

If there was a significant, profitable market for them in the States they'd sell them here. Coolness factor is also increased whenever something is unavailable or difficult to obtain.

Japanese do well in designing golf clubs. BTW my opinion on Japanese Golf clubs are they are way more expensive compared to the US version.

I saw a Japanese putter selling for $600. A driver for $800. Man! you got to be rich in order to play golf in Japan.
Whats in my Golf Bag:
Driver: Nike Sumo 5000

The reason for this is that there is a huge market for Forged clubs in Japan. Remember, the Japanese have a tradition of forging metal that goes back nearly a thousand years. Japanese are much more conservative than we are, they are very uptight about tradition and generally regarded as perfectionists. Forged clubs sell much better in Japan, and though they are more expensive, Japan has less income inequality than we do. The prices of these forged irons are steep, but within range of most anyone.

In addition to all of that, the market for golf there is drastically different. Due to space restrictions any land that golf courses are on comes at a pretty high premium. In reaction to that the money involved to play golf makes it very very expensive and those who can afford it will pay more for clubs as well.

I can vouch for that. Playing golf here on an ok course is a minimum of 13,000 yen, about 150 bucks. Add the fact that you have to drive a minimum of 1 hour to/from the course, wake up at 4 in the morning to avoid traffic and pay a ridiculous amount of money for the compulsory lunch between the two halves and you get the explanation to my empty pockets.

Still love the game, though. As for the clubs, well, I don't think Bridgestone or Yamaha or any of the domestic brands want to invest too much in international distribution for now. The current crazy yen/dollar exchange rate makes it not worth it anyways.

I know that's true! I saw someone selling some limited edition Daiwa driver the other day for like $1100. I started looking into them and their cheapest driver is around $600 I believe. Heck, until I saw that, I didn't even know Daiwa made golf clubs! I've been fishing Daiwa rods and reels for years, but never thought a company would make such an odd combination of things.

Japanese golfers almost exclusively carry forged iron sets in their bags; Ping introduced the Anser irons to improve their market share in the Japanese market, and why Nike has forged Machspeed irons for sale there.

Bridgestone has extensive American distribution; the latest generation of irons (J38) doesn't have a blade sold here. The J36 blades can probably still be found in some places.
