My most fun solo golfing experience came in the rain...

Local short-ish muni course...I shot a 3 under 9 holes that included a 100 yard hole-out and a lot of striped irons and drives. Putting and anything less than a full wedge was ghastly (ball behaves oddly when it's skidding) but interesting.

I actually like playing golf in bad conditions because it keeps you from getting too far in your head about things.

Buy rain gloves. They work well.

Not to argue....... but the hanky's actually give you much better feel. I have tried almost every rain glove out there.

But mayby you could point me towards a better one?

Any golfers out there who golf often in the rain?

Yeah, I golf out in the rain sometimes. Only when it's a light rain or drizzle. Anything more than that and it's not worth it.

I just have some FootJoy rain gloves, so I doubt they're anything special. But, I can't tell much difference between the rain gloves and my usual gloves, so feel hasn't been much of an issue. The handkerchief might help in those situations where I don't wear a glove (usually just chips and putts).

I think they actually ended up closing the course later in the afternoon. The pin cup things were completely flooded with water all the to the top. the bunkers were flooded so it was difficult to hit out of, big muddy puddles on the fairway and

Hate those careless golfers who have no respect for the course at all.

I went on a golf trip over the labor day weekend to a nice resort in northern Michigan, and it rained pretty hard the day before we teed off. Of course the fairways and greens were very soft and often times still soaked in water. There were several spots were the idiots dug the whole grass and soil with the spinning tires/carts. Ugh. Dan

I don't mind golfing in the rain. I won't start a round if it is down pouring, but if it starts during a round I'll finish and if it is only a light rain I'll start a round. I've played some of my best rounds in the rain.

Regarding putting on soaked greens.... yeah, of course it will make putting trickier than usual and will probably add a few putts/strokes to your usual score. One thing I do when it is raining or is really wet, I get really agressive in going at the pin with my approach shots. Which I should do anyways, I'd probably score better. But...knowing that I'm not going to get much roll, I'll just go at it and usually end up leaving it closer than I normally would...meaning, of course, shorter putts. So that's how i handle that.

I don't know why, but for some reason my ball striking is pretty darn good in the rain. I loose a lot of distance (im not a long hitter to begin with) of the tee with less roll, though.

During late September through November.... I usually have the course to myself in the afternoons. Sometimes there is a steady drizzle and for some unknown reason...... I love it. I do not play much here in the summer. (too hot) I will play 3-4 times a week from Sept-May. I can deal with rain alot better than the heat.

I carry a hankerchief cut in half to place between my hand and the grip. You dont even know its there, and it gives me the same feel as a dry grip.

Is that allowable under the rules of golf?

Yes. 14-3.c.iii: "A towel or handkerchief may be wrapped around the grip."

im the same way. i can't handle heat. when I lived in Oklahoma for a couple years...the heat would go up to 100+ during summer months and yeah...melt on the fairway.

I actually got that tip from a golf magazine on a article about

Tom Watson and wet play at the British Open . The tip won me the Navy regionals one year (1985) as we played in 2 days of solid rain. I have had players contest my using the hanky a few times in tournaments. I never said a word, and let them go cry to the officials.

A light rain is one of the best times to play. No one out there, grab the rain jacket and play. Just no Winn grips!! Lighting on the other hand is terrifying.

Winn grips are junk in the rain. They seem to absorb water and get squishy and stay that way, even after it has stopped raining. I used to have one on my SW, but ditched it, and now I need to get rid of the one on my putter.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
