Been taking lessons for a while (about 10 lessons I'd say), and my pro gave me a fitting the other day. He didn't use any machines or anything. He based this off of how far my ball goes and that lie board thing and just knowing my swing.

Shaft: DG S300
Lie angle: 2 degrees upright

Because I was curious, I went to a golf shop and got the hour long custom fitting deal with the launch angle and swing speed stats and what not. Stats

6i: 93mph, 1 degree upright
Dr: 105 mph
Used that shaft optimizer thing and it said I needed X-Stiff (on the line of Tour stiff, which I never even heard of)
Shaft: Project X 6.0

I didn't buy any new clubs yet, but my gut tells me to go with the Pro's recommendations. I'm clueless though. Any ideas?

This belongs in the equipment section.

Think you can use a stiff for driver but it all depends on the company who makes the shaft since their definition of stiff differs.

You can't go wrong with either DGS300 or PX6.0. I find PX6.0 a bit too much for me at 85mph but I do use the DGS300.

IMO,at this stage in your game I'd stick with the S300's for a season. After you become a decent ball striker and have refined your swing THEN hit the Mizuno shaft optimizer and see what it suggests.

Launch monitors and shaft optimizer are great tools, but for them to be accurate you have to have a fairly repeatable swing. Otherwise the data can change day to day b/c of a inconsistent swing.

Fitting is a tricky thing. I've been fit 3 times - all different results - none right.

Your local large style store usually has all the latest demo's so you can try different shafts that way. Also, you can buy just a 6 iron or 2 or 3 6-irons with different configurations and see what you like before you buy the whole set.

Based on my experience, I would go with the pro who knows your swing because swinging on a monitor and swinging on the course can be quite different. You could easily swing faster, slower, more compact, shorter backswing, etc., when you're swinging on the course. But, I would also experient with other club confurations so you can get familiar with equipment in general. Knowing how the equipment specs effect your swing is very important.

I have been working with one pro for a while now and he took me to a very well respected club fitted, probably the best around my part of the world. I had DGS300 and they were too much for me, but interestingly after a few hours with this guy (several different days), he did say that I would need to be swinging my 6 iron at 92mph for my DGS300 setup to be appropriate, I am not a clubfitter and dont know how transferable this is, but it would seem atleast your speed is in the right area, mine was a lot lower and the new shafts are great for me, so much easier to swing!

DG s300 is the way to go. Stick with your pro and keep taking the lessons. Moving up to X is a big step and until you get that cap down and you are hitting the ball consistently I would only do it if the pro recommends it. It sounds like he has been around and that is invaluable for you at this stage.

Don't need machines really...

Lie board is key, it will tell you directy how far off you are, you can do this by trial and error. Just don't watch them change the lie you will cringe to see your clubs in that thing..

1 degree and 2 degrees isn't to far off, probably go with the lie board, i like it better
Shaft optimizer is shit, i hate the thing. Look at the shaft he recommended you, Project X 6.0, thats a shaft that tour players use, with high swing speeds, also its the most expensive shaft out there. He's trying to sell you an expensive shaft. The DG S300's are really good shafts for about half the cost.

Honestly, iron shafts, i like them matched with the swing speed and how they feel in your hands. Like for me, i am 6'1", 225lbs, but i am stocky, so i have a hard time with clubs that are lighter because i can't feel them at the top of the swing. Thats why i switched my driver shaft from 56 grams to 77 grams. I am saving up to get new iron shafts for my irons next year, they are the taylormade ultra fast iron shafts, way to light for me.

I think you go to find something that feels good. Go to a demo day and try out different shafts.

Thanks everyone.

When I was trying out shafts, I liked the DG s300 the best, but I was worried I may have just been biased cause that's what my pro recommended. Based on what everyone said here, I'll go with the recs from my pro and get the s300 2 degrees upright.

I'm going to stick with the stock stiff shafts for my driver and woods.

Thanks everyone.

S300, PX6.0...fairly similar, but the 6.0 will be slightly stiffer.

S300 is a work horse. You really can't go wrong with it. Probably THE most popular shaft to date.

hmmmm PX5.5 is more equal to DG300S, PX6.0 is for the guy with a really fast swing or for the guy needing to be super straight ..... maybe the 6.0 Flighted is somewhere near the DG300S ...

And to the OP, it sure is best to stick with you pro's advise, he knows your swing best ...... at a monitor you problably hit a bit stronger than normal, and it is in the shop's interest to sell the stuff they make most money on.....

Thanks everyone.

Go with your pro and you should be biased. It sounds like he doesn't have a financial interest in what shaft you are playing and he knows your swing. Now that you have the iron shafts, you should look at your woods. My experience is that with your swing speed, you should ask your pro if there is anything better for your woods. Stock shafts are hit and miss and I found this to be true with a lot of manufacturers.
