please bear with me on this one, sorry for the length but I am in need of sound advice on a situation with my irons.

As you can see, i play forged blades. I have been tweaking my swing lately.

When I bought my irons (whenever they came out... 6 or 7 years ago?)I got them from the factory 2* upright and an inch over. I fine tuned them to my swing after that and forgot about it. over the years I have changed my swing a lot and it never occurred to me to ever get my irons re checked. Lately I have been making swings that i felt were spot on only to have the ball squirt left on me (lefty golfer). So i decided to get them checked yesterday, I was on the lie board hitting shots and the marks were all the way on the toe. About 3-4 degrees off. The guy bent them but couldn't bend them enough upright to get the marks in the center although they are better than they were. Still leaning toward the toe. They are still about 1.5* off. He said this is because i have bent them before and he said that if he continued to bend them they would snap. They were barely getting to the point they are at now. He said if i hope to get the irons spot on to my swing that i would need to get a new set and make sure to check frequently.

I am still tweaking my swing and trying new things. My head is kind of spinning with this whole thing. I dont feel like my irons work right now. I feel like they are all out of whack and I am afraid that my swing tweaks arent helping at all.. the clubs are very upright right now. Should i just continue to make swing tweaks and just get my swing where i want it before buying new irons? I think that is the obvious way to go but my bigger concern is what can i expect from my ball flight? I am working on not holding my hands so high. By lowering my hands, how is that going to get along with the bends i made yesterday? i dont know what to do and I feel like my equipment is in shambles. I have qualifiers coming up next week and weeks after that and I am definitely not confident in my irons right now. SOUND ADVICE PLEASE.. so sorry for the long post.

First, I'm curious how your irons could change their lie by 6 degrees. Thats a gigantic change.

Second, I would rather get a set of irons I felt worked and continue to adjust my swing than to play with irons I have no confidence in that aren't how I want them. I feel like if you tweak your swings with irons out of shape, you're gonna eventually be adjusting to the way they play and be out of whack somewhere down the line.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

well i know that forged irons are soft steel and they are prone to changing with use.. especially if hitting off mats which i try and avoid but over the span of 6 years i probably hit off them a lot. i dont know how they got so out of whack.. my numbers concern me because they are so exaggerated. but i think it has something to do with my hands being so high. which im trying to lower. SIGH. all i know is my ball is all over the place with long irons. its going every direction imaginable and my scoring is being effected by it.. this must change.

CORRECTION: These irons came out in 06-07 so ive had them for roughly 4 years

Dude, you played irons for several years and never had the lofts and lies checked? Lies flatten over time, you need to get them checked every 6 months at least. Time for new irons.

yea i know.. i really mucked that up... i didnt get them checked.. i just didnt really know that haha.. i dont know how but it didnt occur to me and no one told me until recently when the balls were squirting off line on good swings..ive been playing them for 4 years but yea u are right.. they were flattened completely and now im in a place where im changing things in my swing... so i dont want to get new irons and get them fitted if im still tweaking stuff around because that would be the same as where i am at now. but they are closer to where they need to be now.. still a little toe heavy.

Tweaking will make little difference, your lie angles don't change much. I've tweaked and retweaked my swing for the last few years, and the lie has changed exactly none.

Agree. I am sure you are being honest but you must be doing some rather major swing changes to have your specs change so much. Are you still growing or what? ;)

I would suggest that you just get fitted and order a set with those specs, then you can adjust from there. EDIT: Lie angle is pretty important. Actually really really important.

i am not growing anymore.. but yea i will probably get a new set before years end.. i want to develop a consistent swing base first though then fit my new irons to that swing..

A way to test if they're ok for you is to get this board (I forget the name of it).
Put a ball on it and take your swing, it'll leave a mark on the sole of the club.
If it's near the toe/heel you need to get the lies changed. If it's in the middle your ok.

I was surprised my off the rack FP's were ok for me.

That sucks, just another thing to worry about!

I plan to get my lie angles checked every start of winter, along with my grips changed.

Does that just apply to forged or is it the same for cast as well?

forged. cast is made with much harder steel. thats why you cant bend them because they will just break. you can maybe get 1 degree out of cast irons. but im 98% sure that just applies to forged irons. they are much more malleable than cast

We are talking about your Titleist 695mb, correct?

I had 2 sets bent in the last months - both forged irons (Mizuno 67 and old Wilson Pro Staff blades) - i had them bent 6° flat - not one iron broke - bending forged clubs is really no problem. Only when the guy who does it craps his pants. I expierenced the same concerns, but i told him when he would break one its on me (but i watched him). So go back to him and tell him to do it right until they fit your swing!

Cast - 2 degrees according to the manufactures - forged - i read people bending their lie´s 10° without breaking it (at least with older forged clubs).

u can go flat for days. however you cannot go upright for days. going upright is crunching the steel and it has a limit. I dont even think you can break a club by going flat. maybe im wrong but i do know that going flat has much less stress on the steel

i am eyeing the titleist 710 CBs. once i get my swing to where i want it i am definitely considering going to the CBs. they are a tad bit more forgiving than the MBs and have similar butteryness. i am starting to think that i really dont need to be playing MBs when i can have clubs that are just as workable and more forgiving.

But logically - if i bent them flat 6° i should be able to get them back to original, correct? So when OP´s irons got so flat by playing he shouldnt have a problem getting them back to factory standard or whatever he had them before - otherwise, every forged club once its off by a fair degree can´t be "repaired" and has to be disposed.

i am the OP... and i got my irons 2* upright from the factory. i also fine tuned them with my friend who is a repair guy at my local shop... they were bent upright and over time went way flat. so in this case it is apparently much more difficult to get them where they need to be. which i didnt know
