They were definitely one of the top teams before losing their two best players. C'est la vie.

Gah, my Blackhawks stopped their winning streak! They lost to Florida yesterday... how does that happen?! Then they lost in overtime today, but now we go next week versus caps, which should be a decent game. We just have our ups and downs, and Crawford is actually a decent goalie.  He is showing much potential to become a great goalie.  We just need defense to hold up more, and our offense needs to show better chemistry. We look like we can play hockey again, but after losing all our great players at the beginning of the year, we've slowly began to bring back team work.

Did you see the hit Chara did on Max Pacioretty?! That was a cheap shot indeed making this hit seem like a baby.

I've been familiar with Chara since his days in PG. He says that play is not his style. Sure Zdeno, sure.

Very dirty play by an incredibly arrogant and dirty player. IMHO?!?

to me it was not that dirty of a play. yes it was a interference penalty, but that is all it should have been. there was no intent to injure on this play. the pure momemtum of chara was pushing max along the boards..watch when players are in along the boards in that fashion the hits are often up around the chest area but it just does not look as bad because there is no turnbuckle in more situations. this was a freak accident. i agree with the NHL with not punishing Chara.

You're entitled to your opinion. My opinion, having played a fair amount of hockey, mostly at the defense position, is that experienced players always knows where the stanchions are. Chara knew exactly what he was doing. I think Pacioretty is a dickhead, but the play was extremely dirty and vicious nonetheless.

Cheap shots in Hockey are  defined as an Elbow to the head,Spearing,Knee to Knee or checking from behind. That hit from Max on Sutton nothing compared to Chara..Ask Travis Roy who just fell head first into the boards

Absolutely agree. Chara saw the stanchion and pushed Pacioretty's face into it. He did it with intent and his hands were on Pacioretty's head/face. He had plenty of time and space to "let up" on Pacioretty, and chose not to.

That he got no suspension is a joke. That Gillies got only nine games (and then, in his first game back, gets 10) is a joke.

The NHL is talking out of its ass about severely punishing hits that cross the line.

Ask Pacioretty who just got his head slammed into the stanchion.  Plus this wasn't just an elbow to the head, it was putting someones head in the way of a metal pole as your skating... Pretty sure that would hurt more.  Albeit, both hits were indeed nasty, but this was worse in my opinion.

Gilles is a meathead, but he was reacting to Clutterbuck having just hit a team mate from behind. Clutterbuck's play seemed more premeditated than Gilles' and did Clutterbuck even get a penalty? I think the league's quick "justice" against Gilles did nothing to prevent headshots in the long run. They're trying to send a message to the media that they're taking the hard line by suspending a fringe player. But it's the hockey way, isn't it? You can do pretty much whatever you want as long as you do it first, and especially if you're a marquee player and your team is in a playoff race. Chris Simon got a lengthy suspension a few years ago on a similar play (similar to Gilles'). He didn't hit the guy any worse, he just hit him second, in retaliation.

The people in Quebec are perhaps bringing too much emotion into the discussion, but I see this getting more out of hand before it gets better. Does the league really care though? People are talking about hockey.

PS. You really need to see the second Gille's hit from all angles. It looks innocent from one angle, but then there's that sucker punch for good measure. What a goof/n.

Excuse my random spelling  - so this isn't Clark Gilles we're talking about?

The Islanders are tired of being the red headed step child in the league and have decided to take some "questionable" actions to regain some respect in the league.  Snow has brought in Konopka, Martin, Haley and to a lesser degree Gillies to make sure their best younger scorers don't get killed out on the ice.  They have made it clear that if a team messes with Tavares, Okposo, Comeau or Moulson there will be a price to pay.  As an Islander fan I'd rather see them stand up for themselves and fight than get killed on the ice.

Ok in my opinion the hit was unfortunate but Chara did not intentionally try to injure Pacioretty .. Chara finished a check period...If he let up Pacioretty might have gone around him for a breakaway...

One thing I have heard from anyone and don't understand is WHY THE HELL IS THERE NO PADDING ON THE STANCHION.....Nobody seems to take this into account....

We can't know what Chara's true intent was, but given the speed of the game it seems unlikely that he waited for the perfect time to hit Pacioretty so he could smash his head into the stancion.  The hit was intentional, but I don't think it was pre-meditated to that level.

True both are nasty but i guess that still pictures from certain angles  and slow motion can have Chars hit seem worse. The hit along any other place along the boards around the rink would fine so I guess its the Stanchion is an rink issue.

Trevor Gillies, and I'm referring more to his first hit that earned him the nine games. The one in which he:

  1. charged
  2. elbowed a guy's head into the glass
  3. got up and proceeded to jump the guy who was clearly not with it and was covering his face with his hands
  4. stood in the runway and taunted the guy while the trainer was helping the player realize it was 2011

As an Islanders fan, maybe you want your team to get respect by playing the game properly. I'm a Pirates fan too and they're not charging the mound every other game. They're not bringing in worthless "enforcers" to "avenge" an injury their goalie did or a legal hit one of their players endured in a prior meeting.

Excusing the behavior of Trevor Gillies or any of the other jokes does the exact opposite of "regaining respect."

The puck was nowhere near him. He bumped him, the puck slid well away from him, and THEN he shoved his face into the stanchion.

If you watched the Islanders early in the season their top players were getting hit with cheap shots every game and some were getting hurt.  I'm not saying I endorse the thuggery, but I'd rather see them have some enforcers on the team to keep the thugs on other teams in check.

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
