I was going to try to play Bethpage in late November during a weekend trip to the city. Bummer....it closes for the winter on Nov. 15. Are there any other courses worth playing around NYC? I really don't care about price if its a nice course. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Pound Ridge is about 45-60 minutes out of the city, Northeast of the town in Pound Ridge, NY. It's a Pete Dye track and quite challenging (and very pricey).

A few friends and I head up there whenever we're together in NYC for a conference. We have a love-hate relationship with Pete, which keeps us coming back, even though he usually kicks our asses.

My dream is to hit Bethpage Black one of these years.

Will you have access to a car or will you be limited to public transportation?

I could rent a car. Not planning on it as of now.

This is a negative recommendation-
Don't bother with Mansion Ridge.

I played it a few weeks ago and it was disappointing experience.

For a relatively high price $130 with cart, the course was in fair condition.

Either Bethpage Red or Black put Mansion Ridge to shame as far as quality and condition. The service was okay, but I'm pretty sure the two marshals are there mostly to make sure if you hit one into the protected wetlands, you don't go in to try and find your ball.

This is a negative recommendation-

They must have had a tough summer. When I played there earlier this year the greens were the best I've played on in a while. Only some areas of the rough were thin. A marshal found my ball when I hit it right on 7.

I grew up in NYC area..unless you're a member somewhere (big bucks) golf totally sucks. I left at 18 and never went back.

Pelham Bay and Split Rock in north Bronx. Whenever I go back home to Manhatten to visit family, thats where we always go and play. Its always been in pretty good condition when Ive been there

I've spent a lot of time playing out of NYC, in Florida, the Carolinas, the Midwest and I understand why people say golf in NYC stinks. The course selection here is decent, but I think they're referring to the travel time, the cost, the slow play, the lack of facilities like real grass ranges. I found it much easier to play in most other places than NYC.

Going to NYC this weekend, if you could play only one of these courses, which one would you play?
