most versatile lob wdge

if you can only put one wedge in your bag, what would it be?

im asking b/c im looking for a wedge that can hit from 50 yards in, but can also good on greenside shots (bunkers, lob/flop shots).

please include make/model loft & lie.

I love my Callaway '09 X Series Forged Tour model in the brown-rust finish. I went with the Mack Daddy grooves and the thing is superb from 50 yards in, and for high or low bunker shots with high spin. If i play a ball a little back in my stance it will check up really nicely. I believe it is 60 degrees with 11 bounce. I don't usually open it up, I rather just play it up in my stance.

I do not believe there is much difference from this model and the new JAWS wedges, but I could very well be wrong. Looking at your set up, I would definately purchase a 56 and 60 dergee wedge, as most wedges from sets are chunky and (IMO) tough to use.

Hope you find what you are looking for. I would also reccommend Titleist RED Vokey's, or the Taylormade Z TP which is also a great wedge. Best of luck.

Any 58* medium bounce (8*-10*) will do fine.

The right wedge will come down to a preference that fits your game best. Bounce is a big consideration, as it will affect the way the club interacts with the sand and tight lies inversely.

If you are looking for something very versatile, look at a wedge with ~8 degrees of bounce that fits your eye well at setup and has a grind which allows for a variety of shots. The best way to do this is in person.

Any wedge on the market that has between 58 and 60 degrees of loft and around 8 degrees of bounce. Every one will give their own preference, which will differ vastly.
But if that's what you want, I really like my Vokey 58.08. It has enough bounce that I can use it out of bunkers or when it's wet but work well on tight lies or if I need to hit a flop. Just a very versatile wedge for my game.

One that keeps ending up back in my bag is the Mizuno Pro (~9 degrees bounce) I got as part of a 3 wedge set in 1995. It's decent enough from bunkers, but a 56 degree always makes more sense to me from greenside bunkers. It's good for flops, but usually I'll opt for a safer shot. It's great from the fairway. My money distances with it are 80, 60, 30, and 12 yards - not sure why.

my standard go-to sandwedge is a 56* with 10* or 12* bounce

as for standard lob wedge - 60* with 8* bounce

If you can get a higher-bounce 58 or 60 degree wedge...that's going to do the trick. I know that high bounce 58's are made, not sure what companies make 60's with more than 8 degrees of bounce.

Had a 60 for a while, but just could never get myself to hit it hard enough especially when chipping. Finally went to a 58 and use it primarily out of the sand, when short sided and on fast greens. Since going back to my 56 SW earlier in the season, my chipping has improved quite a bit and not leaving it short as much. For me, I don't like hitting SW/LW with full shots so I often hit 1/2 to 3/4 shots with the next club up.

I would go with either some Eidolon or Reid Lockhart wedges. They feature dual or quad bounce options. The multiple bounce grind allow for more shoot making possibilities. Also they are QUALITY clubs.

I just got a vokey 60*10* and tested it out at the range yesterday and it seems like a good "get out of trouble, flop, short side green, soft lies" type of club.

I guess what I need is just a regular sand wedge to replace my old one (since there's no bite at all on that club). I'm assuming a sand wedge loft is around 52-56? and how much bounce should a typical sand wedge have?

If this will be your sand club, you want at least 8 degrees of bounce; optimal would be 10 or 12 to really help you in the sand. FWIW, i would have gone with less bounce on your 60 as you're replacing your sand wedge too.

good point. so would this be a good combination of wedges:

- "flop/short greenside" wedge = 60*7* - sand wdge = 56*10* as a side note, i'm very comfortable w/ opening the club face to create more bounce

Hmm you don't need another wedge ..... the 60/10 is also perfect for bunker shots.

Besides that I wouldn't care much for a SW not having bite, if you would only use it for bunkershots ..... you will be hitting the sand .... NOT the ball.

I think you are right. I'm not thinking of using the 60/10 as my bunker AND flop/lob shots on fluffy lies.

What i need is a gap wedge for those 25-75 yard shots on tight fairways. Any reccomendations for this club? i'm thinking a 52/02???

why so low on bounce? you're gonna end up chopping earth into two with that. :)

I'd suggest going with atleast a 8* bounce.

Ideally you'd have a lower loft (50-54) degree wedge with lower bounce, (4 - 8 degrees) for tight lies and pitches, in addition to either a sand or lob wedge with higher bounce for the sand and rough.

To the OP - a 60/10 will do fine for bunkers, but 2 degrees bounce may be a bit too little bounce for your tighter wedge. This is all preference though, make sure you try things yourself.
