I have never been fitted for clubs before, and I wanted to get a set of Nike Victory Red irons for Christmas. I was wondering whether I could get these clubs fitted after Christmas even if I didnt get the clubs from the store. I wasn't sure if I needed to get them fitted right when I bought them or whether I could just walk in and get any clubs that I want fitted.

Posted
You can get the lie adjusted and the grip size changed, but that's gonna cost you extra. But if you need extra shaft length, you're out of luck. Are you at least sure that the shaft you chose is the correct one for your swing and head speed?

Posted
Well, you can get fitted before you buy the clubs -- and I suggest this.

You could also get fitted after the fact, but you might have to buy new shafts, new grips, pay for installation, and get the lie angles altered. The store won't care whether or not the clubs they're working on were purchased there.

However, it's much less expensive to do this before you buy the clubs.

Why the need to have them on Dec 25? If you don't need them right away, I would suggest having whoever is buying them for you write a voucher I, whoever, will buy randomman134 a set of Nike Victory Red Irons, 2-P, as soon as we can reasonably get him fit for them . Put that in an envelope under the tree.

Unless you know that your a stock shaft and need maybe a 1/4 or 1/2 inch trimmed off, you could buy them off the rack and get them fitted. I got fitted about 7 years ago with a lighter shaft and -1/2" from standard length. That setup has worked well for me, so when I changed irons I was able to get the DG SL shafts and -1/2" for no extra cost, without going through the hassle of "getting fit". I just have to take into account the fact that some manufacturers dont use "standard length".

OP,

You can get your clubs altered in any fashion needed after the sale. No, it doesn't matter at all. The only consideration is on cast clubs as some folks won't change the lie angle in fear of breaking them. But many will of course, just pointing this out so if some guy says no, understand that someone else will do it. The only real thing you need to think about before the purchase is shaft flex. Regular or stiff for most folks, depends largely on swing speed, figure this out before you buy the clubs. Everything else will make no difference. You can easily have length added or taken away. You will be paying for new grips either way. You will be paying a modest fee for lie angle change either way. Just try to figure out what shaft flex to go with prior to your purchase.

I'd suggest doing it right away. You could do what Dan suggested but it can turn out to be slightly more expensive.

Hi, getting fitted is not a really hard thing to do. If the store has the expertise to do it I'd highly recommend

taking the time to get that done before you buy anything. It is such a hassle getting clubs and schlepping them around trying to find someone who will take your money and modify them. Heck you can't play with them until it is done so letting the mfg do it before taking delivery put all risk on them. Just a word to the wise. PS. Also after the fitting you'll have your numbers and you may be able to shop for a better deal somewhere else.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

Typically do places like golf galaxy charge for a fitting?
The way the Golf Galaxy guy made it sound was if you buy irons there, the fitting is free. But what if you go through the process and find out the same set of irons are over $100 cheaper online and you don't purchase them at GG. Would they then charge you for the fitting?

I know I am going to need shortened shafts and the lie flattened so I am hoping to just have them order in what I need from the manuf. to avoid the charges they would charge me otherwise for doing the work in-house.

I don't know if GG will charge for a fitting or not but they will usually match anybody else's price on clubs. A co-worker of mine got fitted for a set of Adams irons there and they beat the on-line price he showed them.

Golf Galaxy? Shet man. If you want a proper fitting, look away from the golf shops. Especially the big box golf superstores. That is not a fitting. Look below for a certified professioal clubfitter.

Well there's fitting and then there's Fitting. I'd take a set of Wishon's fitted by an actual pro over factory clubs at a box store any day.

Posted
Also, a professional clubfitter will fit your existing clubs to you and your swing. That is the main suggestion I was passing on. These guys obviously make custom clubs, but a big service (more common even) is to fit customers current clubs to their swing.

There's the good with the bad. GG's have PGA pros on staff that can fit you as well as anyone. Then there's probably another couple guys that do know a thing or two about fitting and will get you fit real nice.

Yep if you buy em there the fitting is free...if you found it cheaper online from an authorized retailer (rockbottomgolf doesn't count) they'll match that price when you buy them and fit you free.

With all the time and money we spend to actually play golf, the "$100 cheaper" may not really be cheaper in the long run. If you have a fairly stable swing, go through the iron fitting. It's free at GG if you buy a new set of irons.

Also, if you need something which "off the rack" clubs can't provide, GG or another big operation can factory-order clubs made to your specs for about same price as "off the rack" sets. Only price difference would be if you went with more expensive shafts or upgraded grips in your custom set.

Thanks for all the replies to my question.

So if I buy a set of say Pings or TaylorMade's from a box shop or online and then take it one of the Certified Fitters, how much can one expect to have them retro-fitted?
Are we talking <$100, $100-200, $200+?
Reason I ask is my budget for clubs was only about $400 to $500 for a set of game improvement irons (4-AW) and I wanted that to include my fitting costs.
Is this realistic?

The cost for retro-fitting depends on what adjustments need to be made. If it's just lie angle, or grip size, it'll be relatively cheap. If you need different shafts (especially if longer are needed), it'll be more expensive.

$500 for game improvement irons, including fitting cost, is very realistic. Get fit before you buy, and make it part of the purchase price. The major companies do demo and fitting days, and even some store employees are remarkably good at doing the fitting (of course, some are bad too).

I have never been fitted for irons, but I am beginning to really see the benefit of doing so. From what I have learned, fitting is much more than length, lie, and shaft stiffness. Not all shafts are created equal. For example, stiff KBS will perform different from a stiff Dynamic Gold, which will be different than a stiff Project X. How would you know which shaft is right for you if you don't get fitted before bying the irons?

I did get fitted for my G15 driver and I got the stiff Serano over the stiff Ping shaft. The Serano definitely was more suited to my swing.

Just my thoughts....

Lie angle change, minor length added (extensions) or taken away (cut down), new grips, would be a typical "average" fitting. I would say $100-150 would do it. The only big expense is if you had to get clubs reshafted. Pick the clubfitter carefully. Their quality of work and expertise varies just as much as teaching pros. Pick out a good one that seems to give a shet. Have them write down every clubs measurement, lie angle etc.. for future reference. Also, ensure they verify stock specs are correct. It is not uncommon to have a brand new set of clubs and the lie angle or loft be off a degree or two. I have heard of countless examples of this. Point being, if you get fit and it is determined that stock lie angle is working for you, have ALL your clubs double checked by the fitter to ensure they are precise from the factory. Additionally, give lots of thought to the grip you put on your new clubs. An often overlooked, yet important thing. Take time to pick out a grip you like.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
