I'm an insane masochist (winter, swing changes, etc.)

Just hit about 120 3 irons, in a hurt-fade wind, during the opening salvos of a tremendous snow storm. Oh, and I'm changing my grip (and, thus my whole swing) at the same time.

I'm trying to narrow my 'shot cones' (to use the parlance of the site). I feel like it's working, but the bad ones are REALLY bad - I guess this is pretty typical of the process of making radical alterations to the swing.

The issue I have is that my draw is so pronounced and my 'cones' are so wide that I feel like I was giving up distance and that the dispersion on my mis-hits was too radical. I hate to give up the low, hard, trap draw that I hit naturally with the grip I used to use, but if I want to get in the scratch or below universe I had to make a change. It is nice to know I've got the low, cheeky controlled trap hookish draw in the bag, though.

Current Gear Setup: Driver: TM R9 460, 9.5, Stiff - 3W: TM R9, 15, stiff - Hybrid: Adams Idea Pro Black, 18, stiff - Irons: Callaway X Forged 09, 3-PW, PX 5.5 - SW: Callaway X Series Jaws, 54.14 - LW: Callaway X Series Jaws, 60.12 - Putter: PING Redwood Anser, 33in.

You are definitely dedicated to the game. I admire that. I would probably do the same but all of the local driving ranges are closed. Good luck with the grip change. I have a baseball style grip. I've tried to change it but just cannot get comfortable with other styles. How do you like the X forged irons? I bought a 3 iron to try figuring the others would be easier if the 3 iron was good but to tell you the truth, it's painful when I mishit. Nice results when I do make good contact. I currently play X-24's and mishits with them are almost non noticeable with decent results.

They are very good irons. Forgiving for a players-style. However, the feel is going to be radically different from the X-24s. On center hits, they are going to feel much better. If you mishit a ball, you'll know it (something like the X-24's won't always let you know small mishits) either from feel or from a drop in distance. On badly mishit balls, like any players iron, they're going to sting a little...you have to do some crazy stuff to make something hit with an X-24-like club hurt your hands.

If you hit the ball on the center of the clubface consistently, they are great clubs. Nice performance and feel, and as Cally is getting ready to bring out a new X-Forged club (everyone thinks) you can find them pretty cheap for what you're getting. For the added feel and the ability to regulate ballflight (vertical and horizontal) they are worth it for me.

I had thought of buying a used set of x forged from Callaway figuring that it would make me be a little more precise in ball striking. On the other hand I should take advantage of the forgiveness that the x-24 offers. Just always in pursuit of a better game I suppose.

I bought a Macgregor mtr2 Tourney 2iron yesterday at my local goodwill. I hit about 50 balls with it from my yard into a neighboring hay field in a snow squall. My neighbors think I'm certifiable.

Last February I was usually one of only a couple regular idiots at my local range, hitting floaters onto the ice.

EDIT: If you've never been stung by a mishit 2i blade in 26 degrees with no glove, then you just haven't lived!!

Try mishitting a Top Flite XL range ball with a 1970s 1-Iron blade in -20 degrees butt-ass naked.

There had to have been alcohol and/or a friendly wager involved in this story!!

Apologies to the OP for the hijack..................

I don't mind. I I pound balls like crazy in the winter. Tinker time.

And, I'm hitting the 3I because I get the most feedback from it/it's the most exacting.

i find grooving a swing with one club, that mant times in a row un-productive

because really, how many 3i shots are you going to have in one round? and how many 3i shots shots will you have in a row, in one round? I rarely hit more than 2 balls in a row with one club to one target, on full swings on wedge shots, i only hit max 3 balls to one target and with that wedge, then switch but hey.....you got to a 1.6 somehow, so stick to what works

It's the hardest to hit, most sensitive club in my bag. I won't play a real round for months...so I'm not worried about it. Once I get a few fundamental changes ingrained, I'll go to my normal practice routine where I alternate cycling throught the bag one session, then playing imaginary rounds the next...always followed by hitting my last 30 or so balls to short targets and/or practicing a variety of approach shots.

Still, hitting that many 3 irons in that weather and wind yesterday was nuts.

    • Take that logic and apply it to temporary water in the general area. The general area is not supposed to be under water. You are entitled free relief to play from another part of the general area that’s not under water. You are entitled to free relief to play from another area of the bunker. Bunkers are limited in size, and the fact that you were not able to play out of the same bunker no closer to the hole was unfortunate, but how does that possibly equate to “I should be able to play out of the grass instead with no penalty?” It doesn’t make logical sense. The ACC accommodates this by allowing the drop out of the bunker for one penalty stroke instead of the usual two, to account for the difference in lie.
    • Day 1:  I had my first “real” practice today at the driving range.  I hit two buckets of balls utilizing all of my clubs minus the pitching wedge (I haven’t had a lesson on that one yet).
    • like I don't like to think I'm an amazing player as I play off around 7-8 handicap or anything but The one miss I have at the minute is with my strike and its getting really frustrating because I don't see what's causing it please don't say basic stuff like I don't weight shift etc because it wont help here are some videos form certain angles (these aren't that fat in the video maybe slightly chunked but its more the fact that the chunk happens 1 in every 4 iron shots so I'm never consistent) https://imgur.com/epaeE4D https://imgur.com/CKeV0Nm https://imgur.com/lJkliwd https://imgur.com/a/1Z7VwK9
    • You’ve yet to propose anything else. And yet it was, and the rules tell you how to deal with it. Your question has been answered. The Committee can declare them GUR. I disagree with your assessment of common sense. 😀 And yet they didn’t really change this one. Looks like this is about wrapped up? “That Rule is So Unfair!” A Rules Geek’s Generalized Guide to Hot Takes and Overreactions | Rules Geeks I apologize for the length of this post. If I had more time I’d have written a shorter one. – Erik J...
    • When you are penalized for hitting into the sand trap the penalty is having to hit it out of the sand, not out of three inches of water. A sand trap is not the same as a water hazard. A sand trap is not supposed to be under water. It is a unique condition caused  by weather and poor drainage. Most local leagues like ours allow the free drop in this type of situation, as long as there is no area in the bunker to legally drop. This is what I’m talking about, sometimes the official rules of golf don’t align with common sense. That’s why they are finally starting to change them. For example, when wind blows your ball off the green. That was a stupid rule. People being able to call the tv network to say they saw a players ball move. That was a stupid rule. I’m just saying, these are rules made up a long time ago, and it’s time to modernize them.
