I've gone to a couple swing analyzers and both times they commented on my swing being very "Steep" . I never really thought about it until last year. You could bury a small child in my divots. In my struggles last year I find that some days Im snap hooking it, and some days i am fading it. I want to adjust my swing so im sweeping through the ball at a nice angle instead of steeply from top to bottom (if that makes any sense)..

Im taking practice swings in my apartment and not sure how to take the steepness away from my swing. The only way that feels right is bringing the club way on the inside.

A good golf swing has both translation and rotation going on... and that means the circle is really a 3-D Oval shape.  So if you are too steep, you need to move your hips forward and turn them sooner through impact -- this will flatten out the bottom of the swing and keep the divot forward.  Move your swing center or belt buckle forward, not your head.

When I get too steep I start fading and even shanking.....

On the range I place a golf tee about 12" behind the ball.  I make sure I hit the tee on my way back.   This flattens things out and I lose the steep approach into the ball.   My take away/back swing sets up everything.

I used to have this problem as well.   One drill that was recommended to me was to find a slope, where the ball would be above your feet and make some practice swings.  This will naturally flatten out your swing.

My range has a little incline just off to the side.  I'd take 20 practice swings on the slope then hit 10 balls on the range.  Wash, rinse, repeat until I got through the bucket.

Whenever my swing gets too steep, I always think "low and slow" on the backswing.  It helps to take the club back on plain and the transition at the top is not as rushed.  This keeps you from coming over the top on your downsing and getting to steep.

This is the exact same thought I have when working on making my swing less steep.  My drill is similar except that I put a golf ball roughly 12-15 inches behind the ball and that way I get feedback for the low takeaway and if the ball starts rolling a funny direction (as in not straight back), I know that I am also swinging the club inside too fast.

A good drill at home is to grab a hockey stick or broom with split hands and practice swinging around your body. At the range the ball on an incline is good too.

A simple drill my pro showed me was one used by Greg Norman. All you do is begin your takeaway about a foot over where the ball would be and take 10 or so practice swings. Then hit balls doing the same thing. I was hitting it this way on the course for my next couple practice rounds. It has made a difference for me and requires no real effort or practice time outside of what you are already doing. Good luck.

a drill i picked up from one of DL's DVD series...

take a club a lay it directly behind the ball with the grip butting up to the the ball.

then place another golf ball at the other end of the grip, on the  inside ( side closest to your right foot)....this will help promote getting the club on an in to out path.

now remove the club.

the idea is to make sure you sweep the back ball on your take away.....reinforcing the one piece take away.... ( wrist, shoulders, chest,......) should all move as one on the take away.

hit as many balls you need using this drill. it worked for me.

Keep it where the mowers go!

Thanks for all the tips. Didn't think so many people would have input on this. I'll try these out when the snow melts. I played with a +2 handicapper last year at my club and all his approach shots he was picking clean. I was thinking that i couldn't imagine with my swing angle being able to hit shots w/ no divots.

i've been working on getting my hands deeper at the top, this will flatten out your plane.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.

    • I would not do anything until I met with an instructor and got your swing looked at. There are some obvious better club options out there though. Spend 50 bucks on a lesson, practice and start piecing together a bag that works for you. Enjoy the journey.
