I was considering taking some lessons with a new instructor, but he only offers them in his golf shop on a simulator. I was wondering what others experiences are with these sort of lessons. Most of my lessons in the past were at a range off mats but we did go off the range to the chipping area and putting green which obviously isn't an option with the new instructor. In terms of feedback, will i learn more from the simulator lessons than at the range?

I mean if he knows what he is doing he will probably be able to help you wether it's indoors or outside. I personally think a pro that uses both a simulator and a GRASS range is the ideal set up. I just think that a pro can learn better from seeing how your ball flight looks hitting off of grass.

The best pro that I've seen that gave me the most help and that I showed dramatic improvement with was in his shop in the winter.  It was basically a nice over sized heated garage that he turned into a studio.  I hit off a mat into a net.  He was able to watch my swing and analyze it on video and help me immensely.  If the pro really knows what he's doing he will be able to help a 36.0 handicap improve without having to see ball flight.

As long as the simulator is accurate you should be able to get a lot of help. Most of them have video, so it can really help a visual learner. There are some sims that are not very accurate, and will not help as much as being outside and watching real ball flight.

To answer your question, NO I don't think you will learn MORE at a simulator than a range. I'm sure he can still help you a lot with swing path and positions and such, but a simulator is a completely different environment from golf/ the range. It's enclosed, it's usually dark in there, echos everywhere, and you don't see the actual ballflight, I don't care how good the simulator is, that's not your actual ball you're seeing.

He ONLY teaches out of his simulator? In all seasons? That's kind of wierd to me, he isn't willing to go to a range with you? I dunno, it just seems strange. Just my opinion though.

    • Rory at the crime scene again from yesterday (#15).. Let's see what he does after this piped drive. If he mangles this b**** again, Imma go out and jump in a puddle.
    • If you're going to make claims, back them up with facts. Do you have any facts that support this claim that Rory does this when under pressure?    Did the hyper aggression negatively affect his play when he won The Players this year making that 2 wins in 4 starts for him at that point? Can you provide some evidence directly showing how his hyper aggression has negatively affected his play?   This isn't even accurate anymore, they called the divorce off.  If you're going to criticize someone at least get your facts straight.
    • Why if you're just going to wait next? Are they behind? Rounds took over five hours yesterday.
