Sometimes when I start off really bad on the first few holes, I just forget about keeping score as it is pointless.  Just have fun and take it hole by hole.  Try to improve your game without feeling the pressure of keeping score.  You can even try out new things without the fear of ruining your score.

Everyone should keep track of fairways hit, fairways missed ( left or right ), greens hit ( where you missed as well ), number of putts etc

This info is critical on knowing what part of your game needs the most work

No, it really isn't.

PS. I don't need a marked up card to tell me I need to hit more fairways, more greens, and make more putts. Most important for me is always the putts. Too many missed putts!!

If it helpes you, ditch the score card!  Unless I make a concerted effort to keep my score in my head, I lose track after a few holes.  I've also found I play better when I don't keep score.  It's gotten to the point where my golf buddies will keep score for me and refuse to tell me my score until after the round, cause I play better that way.  If you don't have anyone to keep score for you, just ditch the card for a while.

i have played many times w/o a scorecard...........i dont post a handicap index though so doesnt really matter.....if you do than your handicap isnt really accurate

A few months ago when I first started playing I never used a scorecard. It just didn't matter what I shot, was just trying to enjoy the game. Thinking of going back to the no scorecard and obviously not handicap index anymore until I decide I want to play a bunch of consecutive rounds keeping score.

I'm a new golfer - I'm studying all I can about the game & have seen big improvements, but still lose so many balls, it just doesn't make sense to keep score until I improve to the point that I get a repeatable swing & can hit my irons a known distance.      Hoping by the end of this year, I'll be at a point where it makes sense to keep score....

Hmm... Unless I'm playing with someone serious, I don't keep a scorecard. Since I just put in my head like +1 , then next hole, add the number to the previous over shot, etc.

Works well and easy for me.

But I do pay attention where I start losing my points at which is usually short game / putting. Then I focus on what I did right / wrong on tee shots and approach shots.

So those are the ones I usually put in my note pad at home. So the process to me is like this:

keep score in my head then divide the game into 2 parts to keep track of my swings. =)
