Hey everyone,

My dad is looking to buy the new Callaway uPro MX when it comes out this spring (I think May).  He wanted to know if anyone has used the uPro and what they like and don't like about it.  I believe the MX come preloaded with 25,000 courses and for just $50 more you get flyovers of every hole and other additional features

So what is your favorite thing about the Callaway uPro

What is the biggest negative you have

Would you recommend it, or would you suggest my dad to get another brand.  If so why?

Thanks everyone.

I was given the uPro as a gift, I like it alot, but it's not perfect.  The screen is a bit small, it can require alot of button presses to access different functions, uses proprietary batteries and it can be painful to synch up with your PC if you don't have the right PC configuration right.  It works flawlessly on my laptop, but gives me fits on my desktop.

On a positive there's no annual fees, basic mode is useful, the pro mode courses (reasonably priced) are quite detailed with fly over views, and the batteries do last at least a round without any problem.  The upgraded version also keeps scores and track of your GIR, Fairways, etc.

Most people I've spoken to think the uPro is one of the best out there, mostly because of not requiring annual fees, which is good, especially if you just play a few courses each year.

The original one is discontinued and the new version is due out next month.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I bought a uPro on woot for $100 or so a few months ago.  I've only played 3 rounds since, but I like it.  I had borrowed a friend's previously.  I set mine up on his computer, so I haven't tested if it is compatible on my computer yet, although I'm told the OS that runs the uPro is Ubuntu, and so it should play nicely with my computers.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
