Do you "slide", "sway" or "lunge" at the ball on the down swing?

hey zeph... you know this... your hands are back. you'd benefit GREATLY by getting them ahead. try the drill i write about below the video... look at the following video of me using the drill. it will help you immeasurably.

take an alignment rod. grind one end down into a sharp point. stick the sharp end into the hole on the grip end of your club.

drill 1. begin CHIPPING the club as you would normally with the rod sticking out at least two - three feet. KEY: do not let the stick jab you in the side.

drill 2. begin swinging the club as you would normally with the rod sticking out at one foot. KEY: do not let the stick jab you in the side.

In those two images, i actually think your better in the first set up. The reason is the gap in your legs. Also your club is in a better position, in the 2nd image, it looks like your about to flip at the ball.

Tom, you've been a bit unclear here. What body parts should and shouldn't move forward on the downswing?

I'm going to post two pictures I hope you'll consider.

Was that comment @ Zeph or the OP? If it was to Zeph - I agree!

hi there titleistwi,

i just had the chance to video tape a drill (noodle drill) you can use to get your hips to slide forward, whilst keeping your head back. if you use the pole drill separately you'll end up with a good feel for how to develop a good repeatable swing.

the noodle drill. take a microphone stand. take a swimming noodle. fix the noodle onto the mic stand and place it like i do in the video. this is a barrier that your brain will not let your head cross. the result is your brain says "hey, let's get our hips to slide forward, whilst our head stays back." voila...

in the video there are two RED lines and one YELLOW line i'd like you to pay attention to:

the line near my head. this is the line that will show that my head will not move toward the target.

the line on the left of my hips. this is the line that will show how much my hips will move toward the target.

the yellow line in the middle. this is the line representing the "ball line." this is the critical element that when your hands are here, and just past, the shaft should be leaning forward.

That's better than your previous drill. Here's a video made by Dave from Golf Evolution on head movement. GE teach the stack & tilt pattern, but this is something you see in most good players. The idea is to keep the upper center (head) fixed, while sliding the hips forward, tucking the butt and raising the belt buckle. Dave explains it pretty well in the video.

Here is another one where he talk about the importance of extension through the swing. Getting this extension is very difficult if the head moves forward, as we can see on the video you posted Tom on hands ahead. It is a trap you can easily fall into. I've done something similar and it resulted in the same bad positions you get. Head forward and no extension or secondary axis tilt. Again, Dave explains it. Iacas also posted some pictures with lines drawn on swings of you, Charlie and Tiger which demonstrates how it looks.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
