I personally can say that being in the gym alot and eating right has helped me out on the golf course. I have been golfing for 5 yrs and one of my biggest problems was being tired on the back nine.As a result of my exhaustion it was hard for me to commit to shots and have the focus to hit  clutch shots to save a hole. But now that i have been in the gym faithfully i have the energy and focus to complete 18 with no problem.I shot a 85 yesterday which for me is a great score considering i struggle off the tee. I felt great the whole round and didn't feel tired. So i would like to know if there is anyone that really takes there exercising seriously and does i help them on the course.

I am in no way "in shape", but I have recently started to exercise and eat better, and I've noticed that I have more energy while golfing. It seems like anything cardio could only help your golf game.

Cardio really helps you when your golfing on those hot summer days. I still have alot of things i need to fix in my golf swing but exercising has really helped me out especially on the back nine. I am glad to hear that cardio is helping you out and as long as you stay on somewhat of a routine you really will feel a difference.

I think a lot of golfers wait until the season to try to get in shape.  The winter time is the best time to workon power, cardio and flexiability for the upcoming season.  I use P90X and it has made a world of difference as far as power is concerned.  I hit all of my clubs longer now (age 44) then i did ten years ago, now thats parly due to being a better golfer, but it's also because of working out!

Great web site. One thing TPI emphasizes is the difference between strength and power . The Power workout of my exercise rotation comes from directly from TPI.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Being in shape can help you out a lot.  Its allows you swing the club harder without putting yourself off-balance, gives you better flexibility (assuming you arent trying to be a bodybuilder) and allows you to be less-fatigued so you are more focused over the course of a round.

Being in-shape is great for golf as long as you dont allow yourself to get too bulked-up.  Adding a lot of muscle can limit your flexibility and actually hurt your golf swing.

Definitely helped me in the past when I've been on a "regime." As well as the physical aspects, mentally I'd feel fresher coming down the stretch. My shoulder turn is more athletic meaning more distance!!

I agree working out keeps me fresh on the turn and helps my mind from racing a little. I just wish i could say it helps my driving.lol. Which is what kills me everytime i really restricts me from really scoring as good as i know i can. I guess i will save that for some other thread.

I can say once i got into shape i was able play a more crisp game. when i was out of shape i would lose focus and not thing about my gmae well. conditions, lie, yardages. I feel like i am not leaving shots on the course and that is the purpose of the game. not to metion live a better life overall.

Yeah man fitness is so important. Last summer I started going crazy playing golf. I would play 3-5 times a week and practice on the days that i didn't play. About halfway through the summer, although my game was improving I noticed that I had back pain that had been there the whole time. For the first month of summer i just ignored it as i'm young and had always been able to just play through injuries in the past. After another month it hadn't gone away and i went to the doc who diagnosed me with herniated disc, which i attribute to heavy lifting an entire year prior to the pain. I had to stop playing and it was so hard because i had such a desire to play.

I'm finally feeling like my back can take a full swing, a whole 8 months later :( so hopefully i'll be able to get back onto the track i was on last summer.

But yeah long story short taking care of your body is important.

ive considered p90x for a while but i know its expensive and wouldnt want to put out the money for something i was unsure of. you like the dvd set? i noticed your comment a world of a difference in power. highly considering p90x not just for golf but for the months leading up to summer beach days. haha

im a young golfer and i got into this game immediately the summer after my first year of college (played college basketball and figured i wouldnt get a chance to prove anything) and i realized that i needed to turn my competing mind to golf which was a new challenge. Its been hard working, going to school, and now not playing competitive basketball every single day, to keep my body in top shape. And i wouldnt mind adding some distance, control, and overall stamina to my game in my first year golfing.

I had back problems on those long golf days and i have to say now that i work out faithfully the back pains have been minimized. I have gained a litlle distance but my stamina is great and i am looking forward to starting my golf league next week to see how my body reacts to playing on sundays and mondays.

I've been doing P90X for about 2 years and IMHO it has greatly helped my golf game.  I've never hit thee ball farther or more solid.  Also never get tired and that really helps with the focus and the back nine.  Added Insanity workouts this winter. Can't wait to see what that does for me.

I will say this, i did loose some distance initially when i lost 40 lbs with out adding much muscle mass. Just because there was less body weight going into the ball. But now that i revamped my swing to use my bigger muscles and gotten into circuit trianing, and core training, i regained the distance and more.

I run 4 times a week and play indoor soccer in the winter to keep my cardio. I find that at the end of rounds I'm still mentally sharp. Also I think cardio is key in competitive golf, when the pressure is on and your heart rate rises it's nothing new to your body. So in short I think cardio is key for me to play my best.

    • A sand trap is not supposed to have 3 inches of water in it. To me that’s temporary, casual water. Just like if your ball lands in a deep rain puddle in the middle of the fairway. I would have gladly hit out of any spot in that bunker. I understand that it’s a different rule. I just think it’s a dumb rule. You are penalized because it rained.  Here’s what I think is the dumbest rule in golf, and all sports for that matter - professionals playing for millions of dollars in a tournament have to carry around a little pencil and scorecard to keep their score and sign it, when there are big scoreboards all over the course and on tv. Can you imagine the Knicks losing because they didn’t count their score correctly? Like I said, I love the game, but it’s time to move into the 21st century already.
    • Sorry to lose you, thx for letting us know
    • I have to bow out for the weekend. I was only in for Saturday as it was
    • Could course committee have an MLR option to declare this bunker GUR?
    • Sorry, I will disagree. You got a penalty because you hit it somewhere and didn't want to play it from there. Bunkers are not the general area. If you had hit it into temporary water in the general area, you'd be entitled to relief. You hit it into a hazard, a bunker. Why should you get free relief when you hit it into a bunker? If someone else hit it into a different part of the bunker, without water, they'd not get a drop for free out of the bunker. Heck, it'd cost them two strokes if they didn't have an ACC and wanted to drop it out of the bunker.
