I am at a point in my golf game where I feel like I need to decide on a ball that I am going to consistently play. However, I do not know how to pick a ball or what I should be looking for in a ball.

I am not very long off the tee, though that is improving as I start to realize the flaws in my swing and actively work to avoid them. I would say a good tee shot travels about 260-270. The strongest part of my game is definitely in and around the green. Swing thoughts evaporate when I get close to green and I just play, it is definitely where I have the most fun.

With all  that being said I still lose on average 2-3 balls a round so (mostly due to tee shots, when I get to quick and armsy I have the worst banana ball) I don't want to be spending a lot of money on a ball that I will eventually lose.

With this in mind does anyone have a recommendation for a golf ball. I was thinking NXT tour, or even the Taylormade Black?

Thanks for your input.

I like the Callaway Tour series.  It seems I play my best with them which I know has become partly psychological.  But I think it is important to find a ball and stick with it.  As far as pricing, I have bought them new, but recently found a good site that sells them refurbished and/or recycled.  (Do a search of SandTrap.com)

Start at the green and find the ball you like best around the green and go from there.  In the Golf Digest ball review a couple of months ago, they showed that the difference off the driver between a $20 a dz ball and a $45 a dz ball was only about 4 yards.  But the higher end ball would spin 2 to 3 times more around the green.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

I will get shunned again,

V2-Gamer, there on sale now, there 20 bucks a pop normally, there a three piece ball so they have good feel around the greens, and there pretty long off tee. honestly there a great ball all around.. I would give them a ranking of B in every category.

The Taylormade Burner TP LDP (my current ball) has impressed me, both off the driver and off the wedge. I think they're being phased out of the U.S. this year, though, so get them while you can. I think that Dicks Sporting Goods has them for 2 dozen for $30 or $35 (I've seen it both ways, but I got them for $30). Haven't tested the TM TP Black. It's next on my list. (2 dozen for $50 at DSG.) IMO, the NXT Tour didn't offer much that other mid-priced balls didn't. You can get the same performance for a few fewer cents per ball. [/quote] Gamer v2 is the best bang for your buck that exists, IMO. It holds it's own in the mid-priced ball category ($20 - $30), but right now you can get them for $15 (DSG has 2 for $30).

I played the Taylormade TP Black, a very good ball, it plays like it should be 10 dollars more

Some good advice here. It sounds like you're game is similar to mine in that you're still learning the game. At this stage, I think consistency is probably more important than the specific ball you pick. I would look for a ball that won't break the bank, and does fairly well around the green. The Gamer V2 would be a great option. Basically, don't pick a ball that is way better than your game. Also, stick with the same ball. As you learn the game, one less variable is a good thing ;)

Yeah I think you guys have convinced me to try out this v2 ball. The balls I play at the moment are various used balls it's never the same ball. I might borrow some of my brother in laws old TP blacks (he switched to the penta) and try them around the green. All in all, some good things to think about.

Thanks for the tips.

    • Day 185 - 2025-04-03 Had a good 2.5 hour session at Golf Evolution. Kinda glad it was still wet and windy out today as I wouldn't have gotten such a good session in if I played. Got up to 93 MPH (with a pause) on my 6I and 130 MPH ball speed (on a different slightly slower hit, a bit more de-lofted than I'll want eventually).
    • I'm highly probable for the entire weekend, thanks for doing the hard work to set it up.  I can't wait for more details.
    • I take 2nd, is a confirmation that you can eventually win your major and also is good material for having a laugh about it in the distant future.
    • I'm a relatively new golfer (<5 years) in my mid-thirties. So far I've spent most of my time and money on lessons and actually golfing. I'm currently a 90s-100s player, but hope to break into the 80s with lessons and practice. I'm definitely not of the mindset that flashy expensive clubs will help me play better...I try to make the assumption that my equipment is more capable than I am. That said, I do know that realistically that threshold does exist somewhere. I just have no idea where. At what point should I consider an upgrade from starter clubs to something I can grow into and improve with?  My stuff: Starter set (Callaway Strata) from Amazon. (3w, 5h, 9i-PW) Gently used Cleveland Wedges (LW, SW, GW) - My old ones were from a set from the late 90s, so I did upgrade these. Gently used TaylorMade M1 driver - The starter set driver had a regular flex, and I had several knowledgeable people tell me I should have a stiff flex Thanks in advance!
    • Looking forward to this movie, it checks all the boxes for me. Indie Movie True Story Cast is all great character actors Walton Goggins! No Whammies!!!!!!!!!
