New Irons Under $300

I am new to golf and have been using some 20 year old hand me down clubs for the last few weeks. I have been seriously thinking about a new set of irons for my first purchase because I think it will make the most bang for my buck. However, I don't really know whats out there and I am on a limited budget as indicated by the title of this thread. So if anyone could give me some ideas and possibly why you picked that particular set would be a HUGE help. If you need any other info just ask.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of good ideason this forum, many will better ideas than mine. However, here goes mine. One thing I think you should consider is a set of used irons rather than cheap new irons. There are a lot of good used irons out there for bargain prices. They are available at off course golf shops, e-bay, and probably other places. At an off course golf shop, ususally there are, while not necessarily PGA professionals, nevertheless they professional club sellers who can help a lot.

Find a club fitter that can make you something fitted (as fitted as you can get for a beginner) but go for original designs from a quality company like Golfsmith or GolfWorks. Don't get knock offs.

Though I am looking into used clubs and fitting I am still temporarily looking at a new set. A few I have found that look promising are the Nike NDS, Wilson Di5, Adams Idea, & Cleveland Launcher LP. I would apreciate any opinions on these clubs.

These are all decent clubs for a newer golfer, (not sure about the Nikes?). The rest are super game improvementit, designed to get the ball up, pretty forgiving and not to workable. It looks like you are shopping the closeouts online or in a store or catalog, not a bad idea. I would be cautious if you have physical characteristics well outiside the median. Extra tall, short, heavy, strong. The one thing to remember is that better used clubs online may be worth adjusting and you might get a little out of them in a couple of years if you trade up.

Hi Pez. I know what you mean. I am a beginner as well and I was looking to get a decent set of irons that would not break the bank.
My irons were very inexpensive and i havent been able to find any bad reviews on them. Here is a set i found by doing a search. they are similar to the ones i bought only i didnt purchase from that site and i didnt get the two free wedges. I did however pay far less through ebay. the fact you get free shipping is a plus.

I am very new to golf. I have only played 3 or 4 rounds total and that was 7- 10 years ago when I was in high school. Though last week I was struck with the golf bug and got on the interet and bought myself a really nice Callaway golf bag. After a little research I then picked up a cheap secondhand driver in extremely good condition, a Callaway Big Bertha II 380 11* driver. I knew that going by the memories I have of the few games of golf I have actually played almost a decade ago I will probably be taking about 7 or 8 strokes on your average par 3 at least to begin with anyway so I thought some respectable used clubs would suffice. My next purchase was a cheap secondhand Ping G2 C67 Black Dot (center shafted) putter. Then I spent some time researching irons before deciding to buy an "as new" set of Cleveland CG4 (3-P) and a CG11 56* SW. I have even bought a 52" Callaway umbrella, 50 Callaway balls (AAA used mix of- HX Hot, Warbird and Big Bertha), a Srixon glove,...............

I don't have any fairway woods, hybrids, gap or lob wedges as yet. I think I will get a 3 wood (15*) and then a couple of hybrids (Nickent maybe?).

Now I just have to actually get out on the course and start learning.

Hello Pez, I'm sure you've received several recommendations as to what you can do as far as your iron search. To add to the list, I'd say check your local used sports equipment stores like "Play It Again Sports" to see what's available. Also, I believe someone mentioned the web (Ebay & others), which is another option, of course. As far as brands & iron types, I would highly recommend a cavity back design due to the forgiveness cavity backs offer (just an example, I still have my own set of cavity backs that I refuse to get rid of). A good cavity back iron that's been considered one of the best designs and is still used by some players on tour today would be Ping Eye 2 irons. Of course there are others out there since the equipment biz is sooo vast, but it all boils down to what your specific preferences are. I wish you the best in your search!!

I was in the same situation a few months ago. I had been using an old beater set of clubs and wanted some new ones. I got a brand new irons set 3-pw o Adams GT2 Undercut irons irons on ebay for I think it was $95 altogether with the shipping from rockbottomgolf. Im around a 15 hdcp now and with a new set of irons it really makes ur game better

I got a great deal on a barely used set of Mizuno MP-60's.

I was able to check out the irons in person, not pay shipping and it was still over $100 cheaper than the going ebay prices.

I suggest eBay too. I won a set of refurbished irons and only paid 200 bucks after shipping.

First I went to several golf stores and tried out the irons (used and new) in their demo areas. Then I went home and searched on eBay for the ones I liked most.

I say go with buyers who have good pictures that back up what they say about the clubs. You can take a chance but I'd rather pay 10 more bucks and know what I'm getting.

If I was in your situation, and it sounds like I was two years ago, I would look at Cobra. They're all about forgiveness, especially the SS-I.

You can easily get quality irons for under 3 bills from the the GolfWorks.

Some people want a brand name. If that's you, I like the used idea.

Golfsmith has a used club section on their site. You might find something on there that is in a store near you.

I have bought sets on ebay and in stores. I cannot tell about an iron until I play it.

It does me no good to hit in a cage or on a simulator in a store. I have to either take
it to the driving range or play a round with it.

The downside is that I have too much equipment in the garage. Maybe I need to start
selling on ebay.
