Stance.  Grip.  Swing.  You can't get anymore basic than that.

That the grip might not be as important we we think it is, I'll leave to people who know more about the swing than I do. I will say, though, that the two guys I play with most often, one of them has a grip so weak it would make Ben Hogan blanch, and the other has an OK left hand, but his right hand is so strong it looks like it's trying to sneak up on the left from underneath. Neither of them hit the ball too very good.

Wonder how your friends would do with a more conventional grip?  I've seen guys like your friends, and wonder how they can look at the professionals on TV and never noticed that their grips are really out of whack (the friends, not the pros).  From a physical standpoint, very few of us can come close to a professional's swing, but we all have the capability of placing our hands on the club in a way that would help us hit the ball better.

The guy with the weak grip used to have one too strong for him, and one day I saw a beautiful neutral grip. I asked him if he had just had a lesson, and he said, "Yes, how did you know?" It improved things, but he has other swing issues, and a major aim issue, so the grip fix wasn't/isn't the total solution. Over the years his grip has drifted left of neutral.

The guy with the super-strong right hand is a self-taught golfer, aged ~55. He doesn't want to spend any money on lessons, he told me that once, so there's no hope for him.

For both of them, and for anyone, the grip isn't all you need to get right, but getting it right makes everything else easier to get right, and getting it wrong makes everything else that much more hard work. I know, you can play with a beaner grip, but golf is hard enough when you're trying to do everything right. So why create problems for yourself?

As for watching the pros on TV and learning from what you see, one must be a student of the game. These guys aren't.

Well, hopefully they don't get mad when they hit bad shots.  Nothing worse than a guy who never practices, has terrible fundamentals, then constantly complains when he hits bad shots.

Sorry. You didn't buy the extended warranty on my nuggets of swing enlightenment.  Had you done so, I would have shipped you a new swing, no questions asked, along with a brand new Nike golf bag. (Sorry, warbirdlover)

Guys - I gotta ask a basic question - does strong & weak grip refer to grip pressure ?      It would help me to know the definition of a strong vs. weak grip to digest what is being said here ... thx.

No, it refers to the position of your hands on the grip. The stronger a grip is the more the V's formed by your thumb and forefinger of each hand will point to your rear shoulder. In a weak grip, they'd point closer to your chin.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
