Hi,

I have decided the club I am least consistent with is my 3 wood, which is a Titleist 904f 17 degree with a regular flex shaft. My confidence is always low when I hit a good drive on a par 5 and I have my 3 wood in my hands. I hit it fat sometimes, push it, etc. I rarely get a nice high boring trajectory with crisp contact when I hit this club. I am fine with it off the tee it is just off the turf I struggle with it. I do like 17 degrees instead of 15 degrees though to get more carry distance when I need it.

also I have the same club (904f R) 22 degree loft which balloons like crazy and has a huge sweeping draw which sucks on windy days, Should I maybe replace this with like a cavity back 3 iron with a graphite shaft or something?

I canned my 3 wood in favor of a Ping G15 hybrid (17*).  I can use it off the tee or fairway. I don't get as much distance off the tee as a nicely struck 3 wood (which for me was rare anyway) but I gained in versatility.  You can see my post on how I feel about my Ping Hybrids.

I grew up hitting a 15* or 16* 3 wood, so I'm perfectly fine carrying one, but it's definitely one of my least consistent clubs off the turf.  Now I often go with a 16* Cobra Baffler DWS Hybrid, or I just go driver, 19.5* FYbrid, then irons.  Second set up lets me carry an extra wedge, driver, iron, whatever-and I've got about 200% more confidence with the FYbrid off the turf than my 15* Titleist PT906F2 3 wood.  Sometimes I just use the 3 wood only from the tee as a 2nd driver.

i canned my 3wood this season as well, replaced it with mashie M1, finally had a chance to play this past weekend and since i dont carry a driver in the bag i tee off with M1, and hit 10/14 fairways. so i am plenty pleased with so far

I canned my 3 wood last season. When I first started, I would not carry a driver and hit 3 wood off the tee. The 3 wood did not treat me bad over the years. After I got fitted for my driver and a lot of practice, I rarely ever used my 3 wood. Then all of a sudden I could not hit my 3 wood off the tee or the off the deck. So I canned it for a burner 5 wood 18* (my 3 wood was a 14.5*). I love my 5 wood. if I am going for any par 5's that are reachable, I am confident I am going to be in the ball park of a chip or maybe even a putt for eagle if I am lucky. I have tried a couple different hybirds but did not find any that I liked and hit consistant.

Just ordered a Tour Edge Trilogy 4 wood to replace current 3 wood, haven't had much luck with the 3 wood off the deck when I need it the most. Seems like alot of articles are pointing in the direction of the 4 woods, looking forward to trying it out.

I guess im the only one so far that likes his 3 wood... I have a cobra S-9 3 wood and was slicing it all over the place about 8 months ago.. Found that I just needed to start swinging the club a little easier and now I am very comfortable hitting it.. Which I think was part of the problem before - No feel for the 3 wood, or confidence.. Now I can crush it 270-280... AND pretty straight...

I think you should stick with the 3 wood. With a little practice, any Sandtrapper can hit one as far as a tour pro hits his driver.

If you're looking for a 3 wood to replace your driver, try the Titleist 910 Fd.  I can't hit it off the deck well (others say they can), but it goes almost as far as my driver and is much more accurate.
