With all the high tech ..... new irons, better lofts, better swings, etc. etc., etc....... I sometimes feel the fun in golf is going away bits by bits.....

Having a club for every shot, any distance ..... actually means the game of golf is becoming more and more a study, golf is becoming a driving range game.

Practice this, practice that, having a 155 yds shot for the pin, means picking the right tool and hit it 152.5 yds. hop & stop + knocking the 8 ft. put in for the next birdie and throw the damn club in the bag calling it a ^^%#^$^%&*&*%# iron if it went only 145 yds or went to the left or right.....

I remember playing golf with half a set of irons, one wood and a putter, inviting me to be creative, hitting high shots, low shots, short, medium and long shots with just a 6i or 8i, to hit a 7i distance with the 6i, to open a PW to hit over a tree, etc.... and being pleased with a bogey.

Maybe it is best to forget most of the hightech, grab a small carry bag, put in a 3 wood, a few irons and a putter and enjoy some creativety again.......

Have Fun !!!

This is what I was thinking you should do.  So why not do it?  I can't say that I am good enough to have those problems you described, so I have fun no matter what.

You need to play my way if you think that the game is becoming routine.  That or rotate your play to several different courses.  My game requires creativity every time I go out, even on my home course where I've played for 30 years.  Just learn to spray your tee shots like I do and you'll never get bored with the game.

See my signature.

This is what I am doing, walking, playing with 7-8 clubs, and enjoying myself. Not that I have anything against the technology, but I am in a simple mode right now.

Yeah me too, all my second shots are a new and exciting adventure! Who knows if I am going to be hitting from the tall rough, behind a big tree, in the middle of the woods, from the middle of a sand trap, and rarely even the fairway!

I don't have a club for every shot. I do try to have at least one shot for every club though, otherwise it doesn't end up in the bag.

On my course it's pretty easy to shoot in the 80s (never shot over 90 there in my life) but it's really hard to shoot in the 70s. I had quite a few rounds in the high 70s last year at courses rated harder. I'm hitting the ball well but getting stymied because of a few "well placed" trees. And when I'm on in regulation the putts just aren't dropping because the greens have very subtle breaks and the pace changes day to day.

Maybe you need a new track.

The challenge of golf is what makes it fun in my opinion.

P.S. How are the Ci9s? I see you switched to them.

I don't know about you, but mine go 15 yards further than my old clubs. It's unreal, my 4 iron is my 230 yard club. It used to be my 210ish and my 9 iron is now my 160 yard club.

I wish golf was as easy as the OP describes for me.  I mean I see what the distance is and I know what club to hit but it doesn't always end up exactly where I want it.  Maybe when I get better I might have a better understanding of what he is talking about but for the time being I am challenged enough on the course and still have fun.

Haha I just like the course I played last year, not an easy course also, but nice people and the atmosphere was nice too, hardly ever shoot above the 80's and even broke 70 once, some difficult holes, but also some easy ones (good mix). My new course ...... about all holes are demanding, no way to ease up a bit, even the shortish par 4's have so many traps, that you just have to play smart at each hole.

Yep like the irons, easy to hit, maybe to easy..... I have to careful not to hook them, but I have had a few that really went long, still have to dial in on the new much stronger lofts and I had to buy a 48 Bob Vokey to fill the gap between the 44* PW and the 52* Bob Vokey (now bent to 53*).

But most of all I like the looks.....

This afternoon I had some fun, went to the driving range with my 1986 Wilson Staff Tour Blades ....... and it was like coming home after a 25 year trip ....

Weird, I have the same issue - with the longer irons

I have the standard FST shafts..... for 6-PW fine, but for 4 and 5 maybe the light shaft is something you need to get used to or maybe replace them for Project X or KBS Tour shafts......

For golf practice we will every now and then play a round with 4 clubs total. It really forces you to think creatively and I have always found it helps the kids in the long run inlcuding myself as I do it right along with them. I find it really fun. I usually take my 3 wood, 7 iron, PW, and putter.

Truthfully, there has always been some type of club for every shot and every distance.  Some of the various creations implemented to get the ball in the hole going back more than a hundred years make hybrids seem tame and normal by comparison.

And every time I think golf is getting easy it stops getting easy, becomes difficult and frustrating for a while, levels out, then gets easy again.  And the cycle starts again.  I was downright grumpy after my Wednesday evening round this week, now I'm giddy with excitement because I'm playing Dove Mountain tomorrow afternoon.

I think wind makes golf really challenging and being wild (like me).  You have to hit all kinds of shots just to get back in play when your deep in the trees.  So maybe just get really bad and play super inconsistant.  I'd prefer the boring brand of golf but it isn't the one I play.  To play that you have to be good and that is not me.  I've learned alot from the years of recovery shots.  Its fun to get up and in from the impossible spot but usually it leads to doubles.  Doubles aren't fun.
